Every chance I get. Just now getting good. Get a Cressi or Mares pneumatic, some good goggles, and decent fins. And grow a set of balls for the stumps

ETA: better not be scared of alligators

I ain't scared of nothin.

Do you use a compressor or snorkle and free dive?

Also, I just can't seem to fathom how you can see in that water. I'm pretty excited to try though.

Done it in the bogue chitto river for years it's very sketchy in some places takes a little getting used to. I would wear a leg knife just encase u snag a hook and watch for out loggerheads.

Wait until u pull half ur body under a logjam only to find out it's actually a bever den and your are face to face under the water, under a log with three angry beavers..that was worse than the 60 logger head.

Been doing it for about 20 years. Everything they told you that you need is accurate. For a first timer I would suggest you try cypress point first. That is just North of the mouth of blind river and lake Maurepas. Tons of stumps, water is not too deep and you can kill fish there almost anytime.

No problem, just a different world under there.

Why a speargun and not something easier and faster like a Hawaiian sling (I've never done this, just a question)?

2nd this. I also carry a knife now on my ankle. My tshirt got hung up on a root underwater and I freaked out for a sec. My shirt ripped and I was able to get to the surface to get air. If I had a knife, I would have been able to cut the shirt so I could get air. Never dive alone.

The best advice I have seen in this thread.

You need something extremely compact. Bootlegger and I have shot fish together on numerous occasions. It's a hell of a good time but you need to go with a group of people. I personally suck at finding fish, but some of the guys I dive with can put 200 pounds of fish in the boat with quickness.

I would suggest to leave one person in the boat. First of all for safety. Secondly, they can get the fish off the spear and they move the boat as you dive. This makes it easier so you do not have to swim as far back to the boat. I have been with people that kill the fish and leave it on a stringer as they dive. I would not suggest this because it can get hung up and attract snakes and gators. Last piece of advice is to consider attaching a buoy or life jacket to your gun. You can use it to float on if you cramp up and also you can release your gun with a peace of mind when you shoot. Some guns do float after being shot but they are easier to find if they have a buoy or life jacket attached with a piece of string or rope.

Used to be a lot of good stumps between the parish line canal and laBranche shore line of Lake P but some hillbilly from ponchatoula/bedico with a makeshift barge pulled most of them out
When you do shoot one, get your hands in the mouth or gills as soon as you can
They can shake a slip tip easily with that soft flesh
Dammit I miss shootin those big tabbys...

A friend of mine shoots fish at the causeway. He snorkels the pilings. A boat pulls him with a sky rope to the pile and he goes down and comes up the other side, uses the sunlight to his advantage(to see the fish). If he gets a fish he hands the spear gun to someone on the boat and they give him a different gun ready to go, if not they pull him to the next piling.
