I have seen exactly one true black mallard killed in quite a few years of hunts. It was on a day where we probably had several thousand mallards in the field we were hunting in Arkansas about 6 years ago and it was easy to spot when it lit in the decoys with a group of green heads. 99% of what people kill and call "black mallards" are really mottled ducks.

I killed 1 in Grand Chenier in the 90's, I assume it was a mottled duck knowing what I know now. But all those coonasses were going on about "Got you a black mallard, chyeah.".

I've got a picture at the house, I'll try to remember to get a copy uploaded this afternoon for debate's sake.

A couple in Cameron and one in wax lake. Didn't look like him so maybe they were mottled ducks? They had yellow feet.

I got the one I killed because I watched it skirt the blind 2 morning in a row. The third morning I went and stood in the cut he crossed through at daylight and got him.

I have seen a lot of post lately concerning black/mottled ducks. One of the easiest ways to tell is to look at the throat area, if the entire throat patch is buff colored with no dark colored specks, it is a mottled. If the throat patch is speckled, its a black. Dave Luke, a world renowned waterfowl taxidermist in La. once told me the scientific (Latin) name anas fulvigula translates into "pale throat". I researched on line yesterday, but could not find the translation. I have killed black ducks from Boston Ma. to Georgia and lots of places in between, and have killed mottled ducks from La. to the Ga. coast. There is a difference in the two species, and the white band above the speculum, nor the color of the speculum is a sure fire way to differentiate. I hope this helps.

I was asking about the one with the "fro"

The ones I've killed had the blue chevron on the wing. Black duck.

well hell. I'm going with Black. My partner I was hunting with said they were black ducks. He has been hunting the Cameron area for 40 years so I'll take his word for it.

If on the coast, I always assume Mottled. All the true blacks I've seen and heard of were along the Ms. River or adjacent bottomland.

This is probably accurate but I did kill a mottled in South Arkansas in 1999 or 2000. Several guys checked it to make sure but we came to the conclusion mottled. The black that was killed in one of our old blinds in Arkansas was definitely a black.
