Any success stories in moving from a full size truck down to a Tacoma double cab?

Seeing a lot of used and certified used Tacoma's on the car dealership lots. Anyone had any success stories in moving from a full size truck down to a Tacoma double cab?
I've owned 4wd Tacoma's before and they are solid... this was before I had a family.

I love my Tacoma but I've outgrown it. It's great when it's just me or another passenger but I always feel bad about putting someone in the back. And it seems to have gotten worse with the new ones

I had one for a couple of years after only owning full-size trucks.
Not a good move IMO unless you are getting older (smaller family and doing less stuff).
Great trucks, but the gas mileage is about the same as a full size. I had 2015 that could get 20 mpg maybe 21 if I watched my speed. Whenever I hooked by utility trailer and 4 wheeler to it, my mileage went to about 14 mpg. That is a crazy drop for no more weight than it was.
The truck drove great and was very roomy (crew cab), but the bed was tiny and could not haul a lot. For the price and what you get, I would go full size all day long.
IMO, great little truck for a teenage/college kid or an old man that is slowing down and just needs a truck for piddling crap .

I agree 100%. I had one in college and didn't get that good of mileage. I considered one earlier this year but due to size, cost, and mpg I went with a full size instead.

I'm considering downsizing in a few years. My kids will be older and might not have a need for a full size. The truck I'm most curious about is the upcoming Ford Ranger.

I love mine except it's a little small with my daughter rear-facing.

Exactly. I drive an old Wrangler, and when my wife got pregnant the second time, she was really trying to sell me on getting a Tacoma. I could just pop the back glass and put my infant son in the carseat rear facing. I'd done the whole rear-facing thing in an SUV, and the backseat of an extended cab truck is even smaller than that. I'll probably get an older Tacoma one day just to have a truck, but for now it isn't practical with kids. We have a minivan for that.

Would a tonneau cover or at least soft cover over the bed help on MPG? Have a tundra and thinking about this..

you give up power and towing ability for nothing in return, then its smaller and it has a rougher riding suspension.
i did just like you, went from full size to a 4 cylinder tacoma and wasnt happy with it, couldnt pass anything while pulling a flat boat and even that couldnt maintain the speed limit on interstate, had to do 60mph max.
sold it and got the v6 tacoma and it did much better towing but it still couldnt pass anything unless you had a full 1/2 mile of clear road to do it in.
oh, one more thing, you cant fit a sofa or lawn mower in the back or a full sheet of plywood so not really functional to haul stuff unless its really small stuff
i ended up selling it and went buy a v8 4runner and i get 1mpg "better" gas mileage with the v8 and its big and roomy inside and rides smooth like a cadillac escalade. has more cargo area then the tacoma did and the ONLY drawback is i cant carry messy or stinky stuff since its enclosed.
leave the tacoma for the kids to drive for school and just farting around or if you want something that "looks" like a truck but isnt realy usable like a truck

Just moved from a 2016 double cab V6 tacoma to crew cab 5.7 ram. The MPG difference for me is not just the 1-2 everyone claims...its actually about 5mpg
Tacoma was just too small for us. I originally had a 2008 and I loved that truck. The V6 in the 2016 is just geared poorly and/or just flat out underpowered.

I had a full size and then a Tacoma and now I'm back with a full size (both full sizes were/are Sierras). My only 2 complaints with the Tacoma are: shitty mileage for a 6 banger (I know you don't buy a truck for it's mileage) and it's uncomfortable any 2+ hour drive. Other than that it's fairly bulletproof but I love my Sierra.

I love my Tacoma it’s a great truck and does all I need it to do performance wise. Although with me being a pack rat like I am, I’m constantly considering trading it for a full size, just for the extra room. That’s really my only complaint about it.

I had a hard tonneau on my Tacoma and didn't really do a lot for mileage. From my understanding the front nose design on most trucks now create wedge through the air as to allow it to pass over the truck without the bed creating drag.

While I will agree that a Toyota won't pull 10k pounds or haul a ton (literally) I wouldn't say a Tacoma "looks like a truck".
Hauling 40+ sacks of crawfish (that's over 1300lb) in 4wd down a muddy field road, towing 4 wheelers on trailers, about anything that doesn't require our 3/4 ton, my Tacoma gets it done. Sure you have to understand its limitations, but to say it isn't a real truck is a vast understatement.

I had a 2016 dbl cab V6, 4x4. It was too small for me with 3 boys (11,9,7). The 6 speed trans was not good. It did get 23 mpg though. It had 2 recalls as well. 1 for the rear differential leaking and another for some sensor that could leave you on the side of the road.
I traded it for a 2016 4Runner, 4x4. It gets 20mpg, and is much better suited for my needs.

Lot of good, honest reviews in this thread. IMO Tacomas are made to appear bigger than they really are.

I did it, from an 04 Z71 to 6-speed manual extended cab. That was 07, 206k and still driving, engine runs as good as new. Off road +/-30% since new. I have replaced the suspension with an OME lift and throw out bearing is a slight issue on the manual transmixer. Both kids fit for a short run here or there but it's tight.

I’ve been thinking of doing this. Drive 70 miles to work one way 3 to 4 days a week. Just wanted something a little smaller. Been in a f150 eco since 2012.

I had a Tacoma that I bought used for occasional hauling around of house and garden stuff, later it became my daily driver, it only took two highway trips in it for me to sell it, and buy a F150, will never buy another small truck.
