Looking for a decent pair of binoculars. Something about 8-10x with about a 40mm lens. I don't think I want a straight compact, but certainly something on the smaller side.

Looking to spend $400-$500. Any good deals to be found right now?

Either Cabelas or Bass Pro was having a sale on binoculars recently. I forget which one. Also, I'd check out Optics Planet. I've seen good deals on there before

Thanks for the link. I was in there yesterday and gave them a glance, didn't notice anything about the sale in store.

STP and FS didn't have much in the way of binos, but thanks for the suggestions. FS had 70 pair, but they were all Nikons, seems strange.

Check out the Vortex Diamondback binoculars in 8x42 or 10x42. They are pretty compact for being a medium sized bino. The people we set up with them seem to be pleased.

Just bought two pairs of binoculars. Zeiss Terra ED 10x42 and Vortex Viper HD 10x42. The Zeiss's were $350 with a $50 rebate at Midway USA and the Vortex were $599. I heard so many good things about the Viper's that I had to give them a try. My first take is that the Vortex's are very good. If you don't have a steady hand or free hand the binoculars a lot, then they might be hard for you to keep still. Very sharp and you'll be able to see individual leaves on a tree at a far distance. If you glass a lot and need all that detail they're a fine binocular. The Zeiss's are fairly close but not as much detail on far away objects. For some reason the Zeiss's do not seem to "shake" as much either. They are almost half the price though. I still haven't decided on if the extra $300 is worth it. I plan on bringing them up to the camp this weekend and see how they are at first light and also how they perform near dusk. Both feel very good in your hands and you can't go wrong with either pair. From what I hear Vortex has one of the best warranty's in the business. One other thing, if you don't hunt over open fields a lot or want them mostly for bowhunting or the woods, I would look at the 8x42 instead of a 10x42. Hope this helps a little.

Well, they should perform virtually the same in low light conditions based on having the same exit pupil despite some minor differences in lens coatings.

They should and if that's the case I'll have a hard time shelling out the extra $300 for the Vortex.

I want some 7x3- binos. The 12x42s monarchs are terrible at dusk/dawn, also larger/heavier than I like while climbing

I have some 8x30 Steiner's but the eyecups keep breaking and I'm sick of shelling out $50 for replacements. I don't think I could hold the 12x42's steady unless I was in a boxstand or had some type of rest. The Vortex's are very bright and I hear the 8x42's are even brighter. Don't know that firsthand though.
