My family has done it for a really long time. Never better than fresh honey. Especially on biscuits

I have a large hive in a house I need demolished in St. Bernard Parish. Is this something someone will come get for free or would I have to pay to have someone remove it? Does an active hive have value?

If the hive is active, you MAY be able to get a beekeeper in the area to come get the queen for little or nothing. We had a queen land on a shopping cart in Cenla many years ago and the hive followed. A keeper came out and collected the queen, along with the other bees for free.

I have a few hives. Just a hobby. Pretty interesting creatures. There's a lot to learn when beekeeping, there's more to it than just putting a hive in the yard and getting honey.

Post it on Craigslist, someone may come get it for you and not charge anything.

We have 2 boxes in our company yard, one of the project managers takes care of them and gives every employee a couple of jars of honey a year

Not me. Honeybees know I'm skeert of em and they get after me big time. And they hurt... I swell up like a road kill groundhawg when they sting me.

I have two hives in my yard
They are pretty much self sufficient and are cool to have around
look up the local beekeeping club in your area and see if one of them is willing to help get you started, that's what I did

also the beekeeping supply places on the net were a huge help

you'll get your hives and frames ready, and typically buy "nuc" hives which are a small amount of workers with a new queen. You bring one of your hive boxes to the bee man and he will just dump them in after he puts the queen in there

My dad and I have been talking about starting a couple of hives but haven't made the leap yet. Any suggestions on where to get everything?

One thing I and my neighbor have noticed this year- big lack of bees. Saw just 2 yesterday mowing 5 acres. left them a big square of clover.

Mann Lake is where I get most of my supplies. (Mainly because of free shipping over $100).
Also Kelly Beekeeping and Rossmann Apiaries.
Get with a local club and order you a nuc (bees) for next year (probably too late to get this year).
Ive caught most of my bee hives in swarms during the spring months so that saves on costs but buying some bees is not a bad idea to get started.

Hope you don't get any angry emails from law enforcement about needing a federal beekeeping license to sell hives.
