Looking for feedback. Have an opportunity to buy a good one with low miles. Like to use to pull a small camper etc.

Thanks

Update.

Found a 4wd crew 02 chevy with 106k miles. They want 9900. Problem is the typical broken manifold bolts. 4 are missing. Should I take the deal or press for the bolt changed? It's as a dealer and was a trade in. Brand new nitto mud grips. Tool box. Trailer brake. Hate the color though.

I though about meeting em halfway on repair bill or offer to pay parts and they pay labor.

Thabks again

I have an 03 with ~250k miles, much of that heavy towing. Burns about a quart of oil between changes (usually somewhere around 5500miles). Has had very little engine trouble so far. On the 2nd transmission now the old one crapped out around 230k.

Gets pretty shitty fuel mileage but it's a 3/4 ton 4x4 with 4.10 gears so it is to be expected. IMO, it's the best gas driveline you can get. It's not the most power and not the best fuel mileage, but it is a workhorse that's very affordable to fix and easy to work on when necessary.

Best pulling gas motor on the market by a large margin.

Also iirc it holds the record for failure test, sobs are bullet proof.

Best I ever got out of mine was 14 and that was trying like hell to do it. It usually averages around 10-11 with regular daily driving and somewhere around 12.5ish with mostly interstate trips. Towing often hits single digits. With the super swampers I have on there now I do good to ever break into double digits.

I had an 02 that would pull a building down. Loved that truck, but traded it when gas prices went crazy. I still see it driving around.

12.5 mpg. 2012.

I've pulled 15k with mine. Very good engine. Under 10k pound trailer and it's a breeze.

Fuel economy is EASILY the biggest knock against those engines. They flat out suck arse on that, especially the older ones with a 4 speed and 4.10 gears.

I have an 04. Great truck. I haven't broken it yet (which means a lot more than you think). Actually just hit 150k the other day, which with my style of driving is probably equivalent to 250k. Been to both sides of the country in it.

Was in a 4 car wreck the other day. Guy smashed into me in a new Colorado going 35 while I was sitting still. His truck was un-drivable. Had to climb out of the back doors. I smashed into a lady in a CR-V. Blew out her back window and gave her two brush guard marks about 6" into the body. Pushed her into another CR-V and crunched her front bumper/headlights and his rear bumper and taillights. I just had a little dent on my bumper and one on my tailgate. They are solid trucks.

I've had a pallet of wet St Aug in the bed twice going 10-ish miles. Wasn't on the bumpstops. Pulled a D3 + triple axle flatbed once. Definitely felt that, but it was still chugging along. Under 10k is no problem. It has some sort of quasi-engine braking, which kinda works on a gas engine.

Gas mileage is not good. I get 8 in the city, and 11-12 on the highway. I do drive fast though. Mine has an aftermarket 55gal tank in it, so that makes fuel stops less frequent. What's weird is it randomly decides to get good fuel mileage. I went to Memphis the other week, and got ~14 going there, and 12 coming back. That's all going 85-90.

Repairing it is so cheap and easy, it should be illegal. Only thing I, and multiple mechanics, haven't been able to figure out is a sporadic random misfire. It has something to do with ignition, but I can replace everything a million times, and it'll still come back. Seems to be common, but you won't notice it unless you pay attention.

Great. Good to know. I think I might need to get one. Wouldn't be a daily driver. Thanks for all the feedback

I just got rid of a 2014 Chevy 2500 with the 6.0 and 3.73 gears. It was trouble free but loved to stop at the gas station. If I babied it I could get 14 on the highway. I put a lot of miles on it and it was trouble free. Like all trucks, the fuel mileage really suffered when towing. I'd get about 9.5-10 when pulling my boat.
The truck I had is sitting on the lot at Natchez ford.

I looked at a white 2500HD 6.0 Denali in St Francisville before buying my truck. It was fine as hell.

I'm surprised you guys with the 3.73s are getting the same fuel mileage as us with 4.10s on the highway. Don't they have cylinder deactivation and an 8-spd tranny now?

It's crazy with all of this bullshite they have been doing over the years about fuel mileage, nothing has changed except reliability. People think everything is so much better now, and that's just not the case.

Oh yeah, here's an 02 vs 16 Duramax comparison LINK

I had a 2003 with 3.73 gears. As others said it liked gas but was a beast. With a programmer and aftermarket intake I was lucky to get 14 mpg with 33" all terrains. I pulled my dad's 30hp tractor with tools several times and it was like nothing was behind it. Only changes the plugs and the belts because I wanted to. Very low maintenance.
