Any arrow experts here?
Posted by mommas boy on 8/25/13 at 3:45 pm00
I shoot a compound bow with a 27 inch draw length and 60 lb draw. I sighted my bow in using 400 grain carbon arrows (bass pro brand) and had nice groupings. Went and picked up some carbon express pile driver hunter arrows (what i plan on hunting with) and based on the chart on the box I needed 250 gr. Had them cut down to proper length and just shot over 100 times and now my groupings are extremely scattered. What gives? Faster arrow is less accurate? Should I go get the cx 350 gr and try those or just attempt to resight my bow based on the arrows I'm going to hunt with?

The grains per inch are probably different which is going to make them shoot different

You need to practice with the same arrows you are going to hunt with.

Those charts are just a starting point. You need to tune your bow. If the arrows are at least in the neighborhood, you should be able to tune it by using different weight heads. Paper tune.

I never had luck with bass pro brand arrows. I'd recommend Gold Tip 55/75.
But start with usual tuning regimen, paper tune, make sure you're spined correctly, etc.

Those arrows are far too light to be shooting out of your bow. If you shot them a lot it's possible you've screwed your bow up. The arrows are underspined and that is what's causing them to be inaccurate. When you release your string the arrow is slightly bending because its underspined thus throwing it off target

Which ones? The bass pro brand is 8.1 gpi and the pile drivers are 10.2 gpi. Both seem to be in range for my draw.

That is way to big of a difference. Sounds like the pile drivers may be too stiff of a spine for your bow.

wouldn't that mean they're not stiff enough? should I get the 350s and see if those are more accurate with my bow?

It's been a LOOOOOONNNG time since my days in the bow shop, but why were the bass pro shop arrows working and then you changed horses? I shot xx78s for years after the carbon craze took off cause they work. I'm shooting carbons now, but just because I switched from compounds to traditional for a while and recently went back to compound.
Bow hunting is meant to be simple, man. If something is working, don't frick with it.

That's what it sounds like.

I think the 250/400 you refer to is the spine of your arrows not weight. A 400 spine sounds right for your DL and poundage

Was just on that website this morning. According to their charts the pile drivers have the correct spine for my draw (.380-.410). I think I'm just gunna stick to one arrow and go back to the range.
