Durham Alexander DeLaura's body was recovered from the lake just before 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

DeLaura, 35, fell overboard near Panorama Point on the evening on Aug. 25. A neighbor found DeLaura's 4-year-old daughter alone in his boat that had drifted ashore, prompting the search for DeLaura.

SCDNR spokesperson Captain Robert McCullough said while investigators do not believe foul play is suspected, he said alcohol could have been involved. Investigators found both open and unopened beer cans on the boat.

A post from this board prompted me to buy auto inflating life jackets for me and wife since we never wore our regular life jackets. I've also started attaching my kill switch to the jacket b/c of this board. Never did this growing up and realize now how foolish it was - now wear it every time no exceptions. The one I got form Cabelas is very comfortable.

Obviously getting drunk with your kid is a bad idea.

Sad and can't imagine what was going through 4 yr old's mind all alone after her mom fell overboard.

I just read that an 11 year old boy from Broussard died yesterday on calcasieu lake, too. He was on a Jet ski (WTF?) jumped a wake and hit an oncoming boat head-on. He also had another 11 year old as a passenger.

Not that it matters, but that was her dad I think.

I am curious, how many on this board wear a life jacket when fishing? I never do, and the only folks I see wearing them are tournament bass fishermen. I fish freshwater -> 20 miles offshore.

I never do as well. Should probably have one on when underway. Sad story.

This is awful, but come on folks, don't drink around your kids, especially while boating.

I've made one step in right direction, always wear kill switch. Need to improve on life jacket.

If the boat is under power I always wear mine now and it's a boat rule.

Anchored up and it's calm, I don't wear it. I have mustang auto inflatable PFD's.

If you do not intend to wear the life jacket while anchored or trolling you can just attach your kill switch to the life jacket. That way you're always covered when riding. Kill switch just lets the boat stop where your body is if you are knocked unconscious when you fall out

Here's the video that got me buying my life jacket like 2 days later. This was a mechanical malfunction but it could have been anything - log, stump you didn't know about, etc

always wear mine. i spent a little money and got one that is comfortable. it has pockets on the front for my pliers, phone and lighter so it's got utility so i actually "need" to wear it.
