Horrible news. I know how exciting deer hunting can be but how can you make that mistake?

Marcotte's cousin told investigators that he mistook Marcotte for a deer and fired from his deer blind as the sun was going down, Weatherford said. The cousin said immediately after he fired the shot, someone yelled his name and he realized that he shot his cousin.

Prayers for the family but completely senseless

I had a face book friend that apparently knows the shooter because he was somewhat defending him......or rationalizing it....
No excuse for this

I will never understand pulling a trigger when you're not 100% sure of what you're aiming at. Prayers for the family.

sure feel sorry for all involved, but that shite is absolutely inexcusable...
shot placement is crucial when deer hunting and in order to do that, you need to see most of the animal...if you are seeing most of the animal, there is no way to mistake a person for a deer....

And yet it will be reported again next year, and the next, and the next....

Anyone who shoots a fellow hunter in such a manner should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I really can't feel sympathetic towards someone that acts with such stupidity.
ETA: And why the frick wouldn't you walk with some type of light late in the evening if there are hunters in the area? I mean holy shite that is basic.
Both of these people screwed up in their own way.

I get where you're coming from, but at the end of the day I don't think it helps anything. The guy who shot will probably never hunt, or even fire a gun, again. Sending him to prison won't change anything. If you're thinking about the prison time, then it's already crossed your mind that could be a human, and you're not firing. I don't have the answer, but I think the story itself is the best deterrent, as fricked up as it may be. Best thing we can all do is forward this to every hunter we know.

I am not gonna be shot being confused with a deer. Maybe just shot one day

Yeah-I hunt private land and use a red headlamp in the AM and a white headlamp in the PM. You never know who's out there, regardless of land ownership.

I hear people complaining every year about having to take a Hunter Safety class.
Some people need to have firearm safety drummed into their heads more than once.

Exactly. That's how a deterrent works
If you think you see something but aren't sure, and the threat of prison times makes you question whether or not it is a human, then job done. You will wait to be sure and risk losing a deer rather than risk prison time

So using your logic, the threat of prison time is stronger than the threat of killing your cousin.
Ite.

Adults make mistakes too.
No legal expert but I was thinking that deaths caused due to 'mistakes' were covered under manslaughter.
