I have a question about alligator hunting. I have never been on a gator hunt, but would love to. I have a question about the actual hunt. What happens when hunting and a gator gets off with a big hook in his belly? What actually happens to the hook? I'm not a PETA nut, just curious what happens.

Never happens. Big hook and big arse line. They either get hooked or just pull the chicken off.

If it were to happen, I suppose the hook would eventually rust out. Or maybe it would kill the gator. Either way, problem solved, right?

Acids in a gators stomach are able to dissolve pretty much anything over time including a hook

same thing that happens to fish that get hooked & break the line:
-sometimes it just comes out of their mouth after a few days
-sometimes they poop it out
-sometimes it dissolves in their stomachs
-sometimes it kills the fish

This^^^^

Out of 100 tags, this may happen twice a season.

When you are issued tags, you are also issued bonus tags. This is for any gators smaller than 5'. LDWF doesn't want you to just cut the line and allow the hook to stay in the gators belly in search of a larger gator. But it happens, we've caught several with hooks in them.

I've been hunting my entire my life. We catch about 120 alligators a year, and lose maybe two or three at the most due to a popped line each year. Doesn't necessarily take a 1000 pound monster (as they like to say on Swamp People) to break the line. Anything from the line chaffing on a cypress knee to it getting caught on a tooth can pop the line. However, when it does pop, a lot of times the alligator will go bead up on the bank somewhere and die, but not always.

One time we actually came up on a popped line and heard a deep roar of an alligator about 20-30 yards down the canal, so we investigated. Sure enough the alligator was right there and didnt care how close we got to it. Shot it and put it in the boat.

Few questions:
What happens if you have 20 lines set and then you tag out, what do you do with those 20 lines that might have gators on them? Cut them lose?

Do you have to pay for tags at the beginning of the season? What happens to any remaining tags you havent used at the end of the season?

I just sent off my form and $5 for the tag lottery yesterday. I put in for Cross Lake and my FIL put in for Caddo Lake. Both of those lakes will have 15 applicants selected so maybe one of us will get picked.

Im not sure about the gators on the lines after you tag out, but it does say you need to send any unused tags back in within 15 days of the end of season. It also says you get a few burner tags for small gators under 5ft long.

If you tag out and still have lines left to run, you are doing it all wrong. Texas has a law where you can only set as many lines and you have tags for. But in LA we do not have that law. It is against the law to keep any untagged gators, so yes unfortunately you have to cut them loose.

I thought LA was 2 lines per tag... regardless, gator season conflicts with my teal season, so I have zero interest in alligator hunting.

Damn I didnt even think about it being in the middle of teal season. I highly doubt I will get drawn anyway.

makes sense. Also, when the swamp people guys get in an arugument bc some one is fishing/hunting their property and then they pull out their maps, do they really own that piece of water/land or is that the area that is given to them each year with the tags? I wouldnt think you could own those bodies of water they fish at.

eta: so these "draws", is that the only way you can get tags and is it just a lottery?

In our little corner of SE Texas, gators and Teal are in the same marshes so we can run lines and kill birds on the same trip. Opening weekend of Teal is usually GatorFest in Anahuac so if a bruiser got caught, it was a road trip.

Aligators' digestive systems may be THE most crude there is. Anything that can digest feathers...

I always figured their fathers and fathers' fathers fished it and, for all practical purposes, it's "theirs".

I imagine you could fish it but you'd have to catch a lot of gators to pay for all those slashed tires, broken truck windows, etc.
