i'm fixing up my offshore boat to sell, and i think i can clear about $40K for it. what i want to do is buy an airstream trailer that i can pull with a 1/2 ton pick-up, that my wife an i can use to travel the country with

it would be just the two of us so it only needs to sleep 2

looking at their website and hoping for some feedback from owners:

1) new or used?
2) floor plans you like
3) any other advice

I've had several motorhomes/camper trailers both bumper and 5th wheel and the Airstream is a first class product that holds it's resale value well.

For what you are looking at in a Airstream you can buy a new Scamp 5th wheel. The Scamp is all fiberglass and holds resale value as well as an AS and with it being a 5th wheel pulls much better. Another reason I bought a Scamp over the others is the bed is over the hitch and you never have to take down the seating area to make your bed ever night.

This link is for the Scamp, it's your choice and you will have to like it but there are other options out there with the same quality.

I know you said airstream, but there are other all aluminum campers out there. I rented one from a place in French Settlement, I believe it was a Camp-Lite. They are light weight, all aluminum campers. I was very impressed with the quality. Worth a look, you could easily tow one behind a 1/2 ton.

i did look at those, i'm leaning bumper for a few reasons:

1) my truck doesn't have a bed mount at the moment
2) i'd like to keep the bed free/open for storage while we are on the road
3) i'd like the option of a bed mounted rack that would be like a combo travel storage and camp kitchen/etc type thing

if we are going to overpack (a certainty if you know my wife) i'd rather load the truck bed than the trailer

Fair enough, it's got to work for you and like I said AS is a great product. My father has this one and he loves it.

I'm not an expert on travel trailers, but I was impressed. If I remember right, there isn't a piece of wood in them. They don't have the allure of an airstream though, those are just so classic.

The issue with that is your crap is then not secure unless you are talking about getting a bed cover or something.

I would not buy used as your first one, nothing wrong with buying new if you have experience, use it, and know what you want. But all of that stuff is going to drop in value tremendously, I'd buy what you think you want used and then reevaluate down the road.

IMO you really need to figure out if its just going to be you and your wife. IF that is the case, your options are endless and you don't need much space. That's the best situation to save tons of money. Its when people start wanting room for family (kids) and toys that get pricey.

just me and her, kid is grown
basically just see the USA stuff (national parks and whatnot)

16' looks like plenty
the idea is that we would drop the trailer and go exploring, than back at night

I can understand that. My dad bought a big motorhome a few years ago and they love it. I want no part of that though.

16' just doesn't seem like enough room. I know it for sure wouldn't work for me.

I am surprised they don't have beefier axles under those either. The 16 has 640lbs you can add. full water tanks are going to take 250 of that, plus propane, etc... you are going to need your truck bed for sure if you bring a lot of gear.

If you are open to other manufacturers the Winnebago mini line up is pretty nice - there will be times where the weather will keep you cooped up in the trailer, plus having full bathroom facilities is a plus.
