Glock or XD series, then. As for my vote. :) Either way, enjoy the process. And the good news is, if you regret your choice, you can sell for nearly what you bought it for with a little work. So you can always go backwards and buy "the other one" if you ever feel the need.

I do plan on conceal carrying, it probably wont be for a good while.

Rather than getting one gun to fill two different roles, get a full sized or mid sized gun now and worry about getting a gun to carry later.

A full sized gun will not weight your pants down if you're wearing a belt. Plus a full sized polymer framed 9mm isn't really all that heavy.

Trust me, get a full sized.

As far as affordable guns goes, look at:

Ruger 9E
Canik TP9
or like Prop suggested, a used LE gun

Handguns don't really wear out for the amount that most people will shoot them. I have multiple thousands of rounds through all of my handguns.

EDIT: It's also important for me to specify inside-the-waistband carry versus outside-the-waistband carry. One is hamstrung by concealed carry and the other isn't.

Pretty much any gun can be carried outside the waistband. Get a full or mid sized.

I typically carry a Glock 20 10mm in the woods. Have a 40cal barrel I can stick in there when I want to go to the range. Sounds like what you're looking for

I'd go to a store, for sure. If you shop local sporting goods store, price check theirs to a big box store like Academy to be sure they're not too far above MSRP.

I've never bought online, so I can't speak to that at all.

I like to buy at local stores to support my local businesses but I understand being on a college or graduate budget.

Go to a big store to feel all the guns in your hand and then you can decide if you want to purchase there or online. If you're in BR, Jims will have the biggest selection.

Canik tp9 sounds right up your ally. LINK

You could also find an M&P fullsize for a pretty good price.

Spend a tad more. Go hold several and then feel the awesomeness that is the HK VP9

Then go online and buy it.

Grabagun has it for $550 + $5.99 ship and your FFL transfer fee. That's a damn good price and they're in stock

Best values in handguns IMHO are coming out of Turkey right now. Canik/Tri-Star with their 9mm CZ75b patterned handguns and Tisas with their 1911s. Lots of good options presented but if I as going sub $400 I would look outside of US German or Austrian built.

Yes, so far everybody I have talked to that has shot one says they shoot awesome, youtube reviewers say they are great to. Iv held a few and the finish and fit seem just as good as any of the popular name brands.

If you like the vp9, here is one for 519 bucks LINK

Anyone know if this Shield deal at PSA is just for the gun and both magazines or just one clip? Doesn't really give description of what you're getting.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm curious if the Shield Performance Center Edition is worth the extra few bucks over the regular Shield.

Any input is appreciated.
