OP, you said you have big hands too. Mine are 5" wide and 8" long. I hate shooting most revolvers and smaller semi-auto guns. I only feel comfortable shooting the big, full-sized stuff. On a subcompact, my bottom two fingers hang off completely.
It really comes down to:
357 mag = revolver = less shots = much slower reload
10mm = semi = 15+1 = drop mag, add mag
Both are pretty much the same round depending on the loads. I have used Double Tap and Buffalo Bore stuff on the 10mm

Go shoot some guns.
If you're comfortable with a revolver go .357.
If you prefer a semi auto go with 10mm or .45.

FWIW remember that hogs have a hard time turning when running. So if you are in a bind and don't put him down on his first charge remember you can either jump over him and side step him with a quickness. If you are charged by an entire pack, save a round for yourself if you don't want to be literally eaten alive.
ETA: And those who want to keep armor piercing bullets outlawed have never tried to penetrate the skull of a charging hog. Its like steel plate.

The pig wasn't charging. From what the OP later described, the pig was bluffing him. Short bluffs and then backing up.

There's no substitute here for a revolver in .357 .41 or .44
No semi auto mentioned in this thread is going to put a pig on its arse with more authority than the above calibers being slung out of 6" barrels with hardcast bullets to the brain tank.

When are you going to just break down and get one???????
I wouldn't use that for anything except shooting in climate controlled ranges when I needed to get a stiffie.

Interesting question. First, decide which platform you want to use, revolver vs semi auto, based on actually handling and shooting a few guns. After that, I'd suggest one of the following:
Semi auto: #1, Glock in 10 mm Auto or #2, Glock in 357 Sig
Revolver: #1, 5-6 1/2# revolver 44 Mag or #2, 5-6 1/2" revolver in 357 Mag. I'd be more inclined to us a double action over a single action, but would consider both depending on availability and what you can best shoot.
W/ the 357 Mag and 44 Mag, you can use milder 38 Spec and 44 Spec loads for practice.
Hogs can be BIG and VERY thick animals. Although I like the 45 ACP as a self defense gun, I'm concerned it may not penetrate sufficiently on bigger hogs. This is one of the situations where, as long as you can handle the gun, too much gun would be better than too little gun....W/ a revolver, carry a full power load that uses a long, flat nose bullet (may also see it referred to as a wide meplat) that will penetrate deep while providing a good wound; FMJ and RN bullets will penetrate deep, but not cause as much damage. Here's a good example of an LFN load.LINK

10mm w/6" barrel is in between a 357 and 41 with the same length barrel. Sorry, but I would choose to have more rounds in this case. It isn't like you can put 1 perfect shot on a running hog and drop him. In reality, you don't get too many of those shots once they are riled up. The more the merrier

Doubtful. I don't think anything in a semi auto can be that powerful. That BB stuff has some serious arse to it.

But if you must carry, if the sound of the shot doesn't scare them off, you're going to have a hard time hitting a moving animal with a handgun. You're going to see it at what, 20 yards maybe? So you have maybe 3 seconds to draw & get off a shot.
A 100 yard offhand pistol shot? I'd have to see it to believe it. At 100 yds, the pig would be about the same size as the front sight. Most people would have trouble with an offhand rifle shot with open sights at that distance.

Also, someone needs to go back in time and tell my dad and his brothers that they were doing it wrong when they were running hogs (catching, marking, killing, etc) and using nothing more than a single shot .22 cause they didn't want to mess up their nice guns dealing with hogs.
In the end, if you carry a pistol in the woods, you are better off firing a shot or two trying to scare one off than trying to hit it if it is really charging you.

IIRC, I saw some 10mm that was 1750fps and 700lbs with a stock G20 barrel.
