We hunted from Saturday the 14th till last Friday. We didn't see many birds till last Friday. We hunted several places all week and it was pretty slow throughout the week. We averaged 5 birds per day and those were almost all teal. There were not many birds in the air. Thursday, it was so foggy that you couldn't see beyond the decoys. We did manage 6 teal and 2 grays. Friday we limited by 8 and had them decoying right and left as we were getting the boat and trying to pick up. The TPWD Biologists said that they think the birds are rafting up offshore during and after the cold fronts. Then moving back into the marsh when it starts warming up. I can agree with that since we didn't see really good numbers till it warmed up Thursday afternoon and Friday. We saw some of the largest groups of gadwall and teal that I have seen in several years. There were easily groups of 40-50 teal coming in right at daylight. We waited for the big ducks to come in to fill our limit. Anyway, here are a few pictures of the hunts.

Friday morning

Good mix of teal, grays and 2 mottled ducks.

We were hunting the NWR's and WMA's of Southeast Texas. All public hunting.

Was good times but I'm still tired and sore. Slogging through the marsh all week did a number on these old bones.

We should combine our threads. I was probably right down the shoreline from you, although didn't have to slog through the marsh. That's for the 20 somethings.

Yeah, I thought about just posting in your thread but didn't want to step on toes. Very few birds were coming out of the marsh till it warmed up. We did see several hundred gadwall getting up and going down on the Louisiana side, at the north end of Sabine Lake on Wednesday afternoon while fishing.

We weren't that far East. We were in Anahuac.

Did ya'll have massive amounts of GW Teal? I bet we had 20 groups of 30+ or more work us. We would have been done in 10 minutes if we had a breeze but luckily it stretched out till 0900 because we were between 2 bodies of geese and picked off a few trading back and forth.

Yeah, we saw tons and tons of GW teal early. My nephew wanted to wait and see if the big ducks would come in so we just picked off a group of 4 that came and never left then gambled on big ducks coming in. We heard a bunch of gadwall before daylight and scared some big ducks off the water as we were pushing the boat in so we figured it was a good bet that they would be back. The bet payed off with 6 grays and two mottled ducks in the bag. Was a sight to see all the teal buzzing the spread. Then to see the huge groups of birds working was icing on the cake. We called several more groups into the dekes just to see if we could. We got some great practice on talking to the ducks and being able to listen to them talk back. Was one of those trips that makes the season.

Nice. Tough bird to get this late in a hole over decoys.

Big Boggy? Chinqapin?

We used to hunt the south shoreline of E Matagorda bay back in High School. Always faired pretty well there.
