So my 870 express magnum (early 2000s I think) has started jamming after a shot. It is difficult and sometimes impossible to rack the action, eject the shell and insert a new shell.

Prior to this year, I had no issues with it doing this. Initially I thought it was corroded shell casings as the one it jammed the hardest on had a little bit of corrosion that roughed up the surface. Since then, however, it has started doing it again and I am using clean shells, mainly Kent Fasteel 3" #4s.

Also, it only happens after a shot. I can cycle un-fired shells through it without even the slightest hiccup. Any thoughts from the OB? I've a few weeks left in the season and hate not knowing if I'll have follow-up shots. If I can't get it figured out before the end of the season I'll bring it to a gun-smith but I am hoping for a solution.

Same thing happened on an 870 of mine. Apparently the breach end of the barrel gets a little roughed up and when the shell is fired, it expands. Guy at the local gun shop recommended I take a fine steel brush and polish it with a drill. Seemed to do the trick.

I agree with beam you probably just need to polish the breach. There is a good possibility that it could be fouling causing the problem. What do you clean with and how often?

Wrap 000 or 0000 steel wool around a bronze brush on a drill and go slowly.

I completely disassembled and cleaned with hoppes #9 and then oiled with rem-oil after the first hunt that it really messed up. Its been hunted with since but hasnt been dunked in water or dropped in mud.

Run a cotton ball in there to see if it catches on anything.

I am not thinking that dirt or mud is your problem because the Hoppes would have taken care of that. I do think that plastic fouling could be the problem and I have not had really good luck with hoppes taking care of that. When I really need to do a serious scrub down I use Butchs Bore Shine, but beware it is some really strong shite so do it outside and don't get a ton on you. I would do like others said and soak some steel wool in the bore shine I am talking about and polish the inside of the breach until it is really reflective again with no imperfections. If you still have a problem then you need to bring it in and have it inspected.

Thanks! That's EXACTLY what my gun is doing and now I know how to fix it. Much appreciated. I searched on youtube but just didn't know exactly what to search for apparently.

and if you want to go all out, wrap the steel wool around a used brass bore brush:

I would follow any abrasive with a big cotton jag and bore paste to polish it up. Otherwise you'll be open to some nasty corrosion problems in the future.
