Anybody here have one? Accuracy, range, barrel length preference? Thinking about getting one for my son, deep woods deer and hog hunting.

Awesome caliber from 150 yards and in. Between my dad and I we have thousands tied up in rifles and the only gun I hunted with the last 2 years was the $300 handi rifle in 4570. It's light and reliable and I don't care if I beat it up a little. If your son is young, you might want to put a limb savor on it, the gun doesn't kick that bad but it does jump up pretty bad.

I have one and that sucker kicks it's arse off. I would NOT buy that for a young person. It is hard to find a bullet lighter then a 300 gr. I have yet try to reload for mine. So, I really don't know what is out there.

Go with .35 Whelen and never look back.

Ive got a Knight 45-70. I havent stretched anything past 75 yards just shooting. It has been an accurate gun for me. I have a Nikon scope on it, but most people use iron sights.

I shot this doe at 30 yards with it last year.

Well, he's 6' tall, and already has a .30-30, .270, .22, .410, and 2 12ga shotguns. I don't think he'll have any trouble with recoil.

One shot with it and you will know. The recoil is over double that of a 30-06 with the hornady leverevolutions out of a handi rifle. By far the hardest recoiling rifle i have ever shot. Absolutely brutal from a bench rest.

gun wgt recoil ft/lbs recoil ft/s
45-70 (350 at 1900) 7.0 37.9 18.7
.30-06 Spfd.(150 at 2910) 8.0 17.6 11.9
.270 Win. (140 at 3000) 8.0 17.1 11.7
7mm Rem. Mag. (150 at 3100) 8.5 19.2 12.1
.35 Whelen (200 at 2675) 8.0 22.6 13.5

Its a cannon for sure. I shot 5 times (LeverEvolution) on the bench last year getting ready and it wore my arse out. I am 6'2 150 so I have no cushion

I just use it as a meat gun in specific stands with nothing over a 40 yard shot. After I pulled the trigger on that doe, it took me a few seconds to regain my composure. That deer also ran off about 20 yards into the woods.
