I've narrowed my rifle search down to these two. I know they're similar calibers. Which one does the OB recommend and why. Want to hunt deer and elk with it? TIA

If elk the 308. Can shoot a much heavier bullet. Also very easy to find. Creedmoor is badass tho and exploding in popularity. Seeing it in 5 tmes the amount of places as i did this time last year. Also i should add the Creedmoor is a very capable elk round, but assuming you're an average everyday marksman i would go 308. A little bit more margin for error on marginal hits.

Either will do.

Id go 6.5 creed just to make longer shots easier. Its faster has less drop and less windage. As long as you can do your part the 6.5 creed will make it easier.

I'd go with the 308 just for the availability of ammo.

I was hunting with a guy in Texas last week and we had to stop 3 different places to find annoying for his 270WSM. If he would have had a .270, 30-06, .308 or any other common round, 1 stop would have been all we made.

Why would he wait until the hunt to buy ammo? Just buy the shite online. .270wsm is known for not being as popular as other rounds.

Unless you're shooting past 300 yards then I'd just stay with the .308. Cheap and accurate

I'm stuck between these two and the .280AI for a custom rifle I'm going to have built in the next year or so. At first it was just the 308 and 6.5, but then I read about the 280AI. The 280AI gives you the long range capabilities of the 308 (actually better; nearly 7 mag ballistics), but with manageable recoil (similar to a 308/30-06 from what I've read). The only drawback to the .280AI is ammo availability (your not going to find it on a shelf); however, Nosler now makes factory ammo you can buy online and of course if you hand load its no problem (I plan too). I'm leaning towards the .280AI now.

Sorry if the derails the thread, but for anyone in the know, is there a reason not to go 280AI over the .308/6.5 creed if ammo is of no concern?

My son has a 6.5 Creedmore and it is blast to shoot, and it destroys whitetail. We shoot the precision hunter in 143 grain. It's recoil is less than his .243 he was shooting. Can't say enough about the round.

If I was you I'd just get a custom built 7mm Mag. One of my favorite all around rifles.

Honestly, 308/6.5 creed don't really compare to 280ai

For a strictly hunting rifle and you reload id go 280ai and not even think twice.

Well he asked in the context of hunting. The .280AI is a more capable round like the 308 for larger game, and it's shoots flat like the 6.5 so that's why I brought it up. I won't derail the OP's thread any longer though, so I'll just leave it at that. Thanks for the advice to go with the 280AI though. That's what I've been heavily leaning to sense I read up on it.

Kimber is one of the only mass produced company that I have seen to offer it and they are 1K plus. The Mountain Assent I think is one their popular rifles that offer the .280ai. I'm wanting a custom build though. I'm looking heavily at the GAP Nontypical.

Its all good, just responding to your inquiry and not his.

Feel free to derail away.

Just saying for your options the 280ai is clearly head and shoulders above a better choice for you it seems.

I wasn't trying to be argumentative, I was just saying why I brought it up. And yea, I've come to the conclusion that the 280AI is superior to the others.

Between those two, definitely .308 if you think you might shoot elk. You'll want a top-shelf 180gr bullet designed for elk.

The 6.5 will do it, but the .308 will do it more consistently.
