My old man picked up a Ruger M77 MKII stainless with a factory walnut stock chambered in 300 Win Mag. Got it, a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40, and 80 rounds of mixed 150-165-180gr ammo in a nice Pelican case for around $600. Said he just couldn't pass it up. He's bringing it down for me to shoot and make sure the scope is zerod. I've never shot 300 Win Mag so how much is this thing going to kick? About the hardest kicking rifle I've shot was an old 30-06 bolt gun that had a masochist's metal butt pad. I could manage a dozen shots or so before my shoulder started to get tenderized with that thing. Once my shoulder starts bruising and gets tender I'll start flinching no matter what I'm shooting I'm a pussy foot that way. So with a 300 Win Man how much harder will it kick than a 7mm mag or 30-06? Enough to warrant getting one of those PAST pads?

Having owned a 7mm, .300WM, and shot a 30-06:

Slightly more than the 7mm, significantly more than the 30-06

Kinda like getting punched in the shoulder by a fat guy. You don't wanna be doing it all day long.

It's not gonna kick THAT much more than a similar 30-06 load. Really depends on the gun and the round more than the caliber. Start with the 150s and work up. I have an M77 in .270 and it's easy on the shoulder. Some heft in the stock will do you more favors than a kickpad.

recoil varies greatly from rifle to rifle. my 30-06 Rem 7400 kicks worse than my tikka 270wsm and my BAR 7mag.

Feels like someone frogged you in your shoulder with every shot.

Not bad, I've shot about 10-15 in a row, could feel it in my shoulder but didn't bruise. Your old man did good on that buy imo. Stainless in walnut is imo.

When I'm working up a few different loads I will sometimes shoot 20-30 depending on what I'm doing that day and it never really bothers me. I don't find it to be any worse than if I'm shooting 3 1/2s out of my benelli. But that is on an xbolt which has a pretty decent recoil pad. Hard recoil pads even on just a 30-06 make it ten times worse

As mentioned by others, get a nice recoil pad. In the meantime, putting a small sand bag between the butt plate and your shoulder should help a lot. You can use other sand bags on the gun to add weight to it, as well. Concentrate on your technique. You'll be fine.

Wood stocked M77's are pretty heavy so it shouldn't be too bad. It won't be fun, but it won't be horrible if it fits you decently. Any gun feels about twice arse bad off of a table as it does in real life shooting positions.

Depending on how old your old man is, he might want a brake put on it or at least a limb saver pad.

I have the browning A-Bolt II. Sighting it in with 180 gr bullets suck but I knock down all the hogs I shoot with it.

I have a browning a-bolt 300wsm and my dad has a sako in 300 mag and they both have moderate recoil. I put a limbsaver on my rifle before I ever shot it and I don't even think about recoil. I had a 270 the used to knock the fire out of me, far worse than the punch my 300wsm has.

I shot a big ole slick head years ago with my buddies .300 WM, to me it felt similar to my 7 mag. Of course shooting at a live target is a hell of alot better than at a circle down range.

Needless to say, you should be fine.

Actually I just ordered one on Amazon yesterday. Should be here Wednesday. They had the Lead Sled solo for $43 shipped which was a great price and low enough I made an impulse purchase. $70-80 everywhere else.

I don't know if I have poor bench shooting technique but it feel like shooting off a bag or prone for me hurts way worse than any standing or sitting shooting positions I use. Guess my body is braced more and I don't roll back slightly with the kick of the rifle when on a bench.

That's a good looking gun. Big fan of the stainless with a matching finish on the scope. Mine is the same but with the blue/grey laminate.
