has anyone done this? Wondering if the front spindles from a 2x4 would bolt right on the 4x4? Just remove cv axles and front differential. Anyone with any experience doing this?

Why would you want to convert to 2x4??

That's like telling the wife her tits are too big and have them cut off!

Don't do this.
Find someone who needs a 4x4 and sell or trade with them.

Because its an old bike, and the front diff. and cv axles are shot. It's not worth spending a lot of money on. 2x4 front spindles are pretty cheap. Much cheaper this way.

A used replacement diff is about $200 on eBay and you can get cheap axles for about $50 a piece.

Don't buy spindles just
leave outer part of cv in hub and remove the rest.
Or buy a disc brake conversion for $250 it comes with spindles
