Well, to me you're talking about 2 entirely different guns. The 10/22 is a classic, semi-auto 22LR that has a near endless number of upgrades available. When it can be found, 22LR ammo is still pretty inexpensive. OTOH, the 17 HMR is almost always going to be a bolt action or single shot w/ limited upgrades. 17 HMR ammo is, generally speaking, better quality than 22LR ammo, but it's also considerably more expensive. I've heard, but never had the opportunity to try it myself, that FMJ 17 HMR ammo doesn't destroy squirrels; all other 17 HMR ammo tears up squirrels badly.

Which on is best depends on what you're going to use it for. What is the intended use????

It will make a huge difference based on what you want to do with it.

Get the lever action!

Varmint Express .17 HMR Rifle - $550

But to the OP: Totally dependent on what you're doing with it. If you want a gun to play around with, shoot lots of ammo through, and plink around at the camp with, get a .22LR.

If you want a dedicated hunting rimfire, get the .17hmr.

Why not both? I've got a 10/22 and a Golden Boy 17. 2 entirely different guns and both loads of fun to shoot
