5th place runner feels like silver medallist after 800m defeat to Caster Semenya

A Polish middle distance runner who finished fifth in the women’s 800m final won by Caster Semenya at the Rio Olympics has claimed she “feels like a silver medallist”.
Joanna Jozwik also appeared to controversially claim that she was proud to have finished as the “first European” and the “second white” in the race.
The 25-year-old runner failed to earn a place on the podium, finishing behind South Africa’s Semenya, Burundi’s second-placed Francine Niyonsaba and Kenya’s bronze medallist Margaret Wambui.
Semenya is the best-known athlete to live with the condition but neither Niyonsaba or Wambui identify as hyperandrogenic.
Jozwik, nevertheless, has now echoed the sentiments of Great Britain’s Lynsey Sharpe and questioned the fairness of the contest including female athletes with high levels of testosterone.
“This season I had a lot of health complications and injuries, which is why I am very pleased with this result. I feel like the silver medallist,” Jozwik told Eurosport.
“The three athletes who were on the podium raise a lot of controversy. I must admit that for me it is a little strange that the authorities do nothing about this.
“These colleagues have a very high testosterone level, similar to a male’s, which is why they look how they look and run like they run.”
The Walbrzych-born sprinter finished with a time of 1:57.37, behind Canada’s Melissa Bishop.
“It hurts a bit. I saw Melissa Bishop who was very disappointed, she improved her personal best and was 4th. It's sad, and I think she should be the gold medalist."
"I'm glad I'm the first European, the second white," she added.

I can't for the life of me find video of the actual race.
ETA: Found it.

It's all about feelings.

It's all about feelings.

If these ladies just have a "genetic" advantage then this girl needs to just deal with it. They are just playing the hand the were dealt which very well maybe as much a curse as a blessing.
If these people switched teams or used a banned substance then she has something to gripe about.

"Are they able to give birth?" Should be the test, IMO.

That's stupid
I disagree. For example, Semenya is, with medical assistance, capable of fathering children but not of birthing them. He is mostly male.
I certainly sympathize with anyone who is born with defects but it's unfair to put Semenya on the track with women who are subject to the limitations of their feminity while he has the distinct advantage of male physiology. That he was born with a vagina does not reduce the maleness of the rest of his physiology.

So infertile women shouldn't be able to compete in the Olympics?

That's a really bad test because there are a lot of full females who are infertile, without that having anything at all to do with their testosterone level.
Testosterone in and of itself shouldn't be the criteria either. That's imprecise.
The test should be chromosomal. Only XX should be allowed to compete as women. XY (and XXY like Caster Semenya) should not be allowed to compete as women. Because they aren't. Someone with a Y chromosome has received male levels of testosterone since birth and has consequently developed male secondary characteristics, among which is much greater muscle mass, which makes it simply unfair for any such person to compete against women in athletic competitions.

Which bathroom would you support her being able to use without being triggered?

XXY like Caster Semenya
I haven't been able to confirm that. Do you have a source?

I think the science says you are mistaken. She has not had "male levels" of testosterone.

I'm gonna make lemonade from the lemons that Caster has given me. I am using this to justify myself hitting from the women's golf tees.

If anyone's interested in a lengthy discussion of the concepts and subtitles around the Semenya debate, Ross Tucker wrote a doozy that's worth a read. He's an ex phys out of S Africa.

She was only allowed to compete because the IAAF suspended the Olympics "testosterone levels" last year.
Female athletes above the testosterone threshold of 10 nanomoles per liter — considered at the lower end of the male range — faced the prospect of hormone-suppressing drugs and surgery to remove internal testes, which can produce testosterone.
It is not known for certain what, if any, procedures were undergone by Semenya, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Nor could it be verified, as reported in 2009 in The Daily Telegraph of Australia, that Semenya had internal testes and three times the testosterone level of a typical woman.
So her body is producing male level testosterone...which means everything in athletic performance...which is why young guys dominate in most sports and old guys have to retire (decreasing testosterone levels).
Are they for real?

Seriously. All three of these medalists are said to be hyperandrogenic. South Africa’s Semenya, Burundi’s second-place Francine Niyonsaba and Kenya’s bronze medallist Margaret Wambui have a distinct advantage over the women whose development in the womb was complete.

Semenya's sex test explained. Gordon Farquhar of the BBC says that Semenya's chromosome test shows the 46,XY typical of a male.
quote:
Well, fairly, but how then do explain the example of a woman with secondary sexual development (breasts), anatomically female genitalia, yet with an XY chromosomic presentation? It does happen.
In simple(ish) terms, there's a condition called Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, which occurs when a part of the Y chromosome doesn't do what it should.
