Seen this happen on several recent teams in our local league. Coaches put together basically a travel ball team to play in the local league. Once they feel they have achieved everything they can they leave to play travel ball. Couple teams have already broken up because some parents want it while the others want their kids to have fun and enjoy their summers.

I personally took satisfaction this year where we kept 3 kids from the previous year that were basically a Strike Out or Out on base every time they batted. This year those kids helped us win games and barely struck out. If it is all about winning then kick those kids off and don't worry about your friendships. If you want to hang with those parents in the future keep the kids on the team but just make them understand that "Little Johnny" will only play the minimum amount required.

screw your friendships with the families. Baseball is more important. especially youth baseball. you should NOT compromise your integrity as a winning coach or your reputation for placating a couple of people with kids who can't play. they are not your concern.

Could you live with yourself because you didn't win a tournament in youth ball just to preserve some friendships?

I coach around the same age and level if competition. Assuming next year will be the first year w/ tryouts and cuts, I'm guessing 11 or 12 y/o? The earlier of kids to start puberty should be starting about now. A fall and winter's worth of development at this age will go a long way. The situation may work itself out if those lagging behind start to catch up and/or the differences will become clearly apparent to the parents.

Best way to handle it would be to sit down with the parents and explain that you'd love to keep their kid but his playing time may be limited. It might be in his best interest to find a team where he can get solid playing time which will be better for his overall development in the sport.

no i'm saying win at all costs nothing is more important in life than winning youth baseball tournaments. I value it over my marriage, my kids well being and all friendships

Talk to the parents now and be honest. Tell them that you're invested in their son, want to see him succeed, but you're worried that his current level of play won't be enough next year.

This will give them almost a year to practice and improve. If they're dedicated they can invest the time and effort. If not, well you gave them fair warning

Wait, so you actually coached the kids up rather than cutting them loose so that you can guarantee your other kids a cheap and cheesy ring every other weekend?

Crazy.

Crazy.

kids that aren't good enough to play travel ball shouldn't play travel ball. Play little league. Parents that are serious enough about their kids baseball don't want to spend thousands of dollars for their kids to play travel ball and be dragged down by kids that strike out every time.

I completely agree with that, but the problem is that shite is starting way too young. There aren't many recreational leagues anymore. Damn near every coach thinks his team needs to be "reconfigured" for a travel team. The guy said it was Neighborhood/school friends. Hell, if they are 10 and under keep them together and let them be kids playing baseball. So what if they get their arse kicked now and then.

In that case you shouldn't go into it expecting much anyway. if you're doing it so the kids can hang out, let the kids hang out.

Parents don't give a shyt about "reasons". All they see is their kid was cut.

Get a team of "outsiders" to come in and judge your tryouots. You can secretly hold veto power.

You going to start charging the $1,500 - $3,000 to be on the team. Also, make sure you keep the fine moms. They will give it up to make sure their kid gets to play.

It is a stupid trophy. We've won tournaments and been killed in tournaments. It's just youth baseball, but there's a reason they keep score. Every team is there to win and there's nothing wrong with wanting to win and making adjustments to try to accomplish that.

Partner with them to find another team for the kids.

This is what I was thinking.

Next (spring?) season we will be to the age where players will have to tryout to make the team.

I would be straight up with the parents about it right now, and don't wait til tryouts. Tell them that numbers are tight and if tryouts were today you wouldn't be able to take them. That will give them a year to either accept it or get their kid some serious instruction.

We play year 'round. Season ends July 31. Practice/Tryouts will be in August.

Let the bashing begin. Keep in mind I asked for advice on cutting players, not asking whether or not kids should play baseball all year long.

2 more years half those kids will quit baseball and start doing drugs since they lost their childhood to year round baseball but we got trophies on the bookshelf.
