Your Hard Earned Tax Dollars at Work in the State of LA

Awhile back i worked for the state and alongside a company that was contracted by LA to provide specific services.
When the end of the fiscal year was near, this company realized that they had not utilized the entire budget offered to them. If they did not use all of the money, the budget would be reduced for the next fiscal year.
So to fix this problem, they threw a conference in New Orleans for all of their employees (about 150) at a very respectable hotel for two nights (paid for all food and services). Since this conference was suppose to last over two work days, the employees were also on the clock. The conference meeting only lasted ONE hour, yet they stayed for two nights.
Us tax payers pretty much paid for this company to send their employees on a paid vacation. (note: their regular vacation days align with the state's)
i know :csb:

Although I do not agree with companies that do this. These types of activities are common practice.

Yep, this is pretty common among all state agencies. It's a backwards arse fricking policy. They should be rewarded for saving money - not penalized.

No way, no one in the private sector has ever made sure to use up their allocated budget. Not once in the history of ever.

To what uses are soft tax dollars put in the great state of LA?

Yeah I know that the state orders new construction equipment from Caterpillar every year... use it or lose it.

Typical government bloat and waste. And people wonder why we are $18 trillion in debt.

Waste in rampant, even still with the hospitals the state "once owned" but sold. they are still state subsidized

Manager should have taken the bonus instead.

You don't want to work yourself out of a job , when you're riding the Gravy Train .

Oscar: Here are our final actual costs for this year.
Michael: Mmm... okay.
Oscar: As you can see, we did pretty well, so...
Michael: Yes. Yes, I can see... that we did indeed. Why don't you explain this to me like I am an eight-year old.
Oscar: Alright, well this is the overall budget for this fiscal year along the x-axis...
Michael: Yes.
Oscar: Right there.
Michael: There's the x-ax...icks.
Oscar: You can see clearly on this page that we have a surplus of $4300.
Michael: Mmhmm, okay.
Oscar: But we have to spend that by the end of the day or it will be deducted from next year's budget.
Michael: Why don't you explain this to me like I'm five.
Oscar: Your mommy and daddy give you ten dollars to open up a lemonade stand. So you go out and you buy cups and you buy lemons and you buy sugar. And now you find out that it only costs you nine dollars.
Michael: Ho-oh!
Oscar: So you have an extra dollar.
Michael: Yeah.
Oscar: So you can give that dollar back to mommy and daddy, but guess what? Next summer...
Michael: I'll be six.
Oscar: And you ask them for money, they're gonna give you nine dollars. 'Cause that's what they think it costs to run the stand. So what you want to do is spend that dollar on something now, so that your parents think it costs ten dollars to run the lemonade stand.
Michael: So the dollar's a surplus. This is a surplus.
Oscar: We have to spend that $4300 by the end of the day or it'll be deducted from next year's budget.
Michael: [whistles poorly] Whoo.
Oscar: We should spend this money on a new copier, which we desperately need.
Michael: Okay, break it down in terms of, um... okay, I-I think I'm getting you...

Literally every state agency and politician does this. The goal of politics is to get the largest budget possible. You don't get that by not using your entire budget the year before.

Anybody that works with a government entity knows the amount of waste. I've seen it in the construction business plenty of times. It's the use it or lose it mentality...nobody does anything about it because it will ultimately affect their gravy train as well. Its sickening but will never go away.

And the goal of the citizenry should be finding out who does this, dragging them out on to the streets, and beating the hell out of them.

And the money should be paid back in full. Misappropriation use of government funds.

On the subject of government waste.
About two months ago the Army Corp of Engineers hired about 50 trucks to haul dirt for a levee around Bayou Signet. The job went on for 5 days until a Corp employee actually visited the site and determined there was no need for a levee here since there was already one. The Corp. spent close to a million dollars based on info from a satellite photo. Not once did they go out and actually look at the job site to see what, if anything was needed. WOW
