What is the fewest number of times you can use the scale to determine which is the heavier and how do you do it?

1 time. Guess right the first time.

Zero. I've handled enough balls to be able to spot the heavier one without a scale.

The answer is 2

1. Break balls up 3-3-2

2. Compare 3a and 3b

2a. If one is heavier than the other, you know ball is contained within heavier set. Weigh two balls within that heavier group of three. If one is greater, there it is. If equal, the third ball is heaviest.

2b. If equal, you know heaviest ball is within the pair not included in step 2. Put them on the scale and figure out which one is heavier.

Edit: Someone beat me to it

Log base2 of 8 = 3

My answer is 3

ETA: This answer is wrong. I are stoopid

If they are identical then there shouldn't be any that weight more. Therefore I don't need to perform a test.

You should be able to tell which is heaviest when holding them and arranging on the scale.

Therefore 0 times

2–take the obvious answer (3) and subtract one. You have to have test taking skills.

2 times.

Weigh 3 and 3.

If even, weigh the remaining two.
If not even, weigh two of the three from the beaver set.
