So my gas furnace hasn't been working consistantly for about a month (something with the igniter). The thing is, when it works, it heats like a champ so I know it's not the actual heater, just some sort of control or something minor.

Anyway, I called out one company (A) and they've come 6 times (charged for three visits) and installed a part that was sure to fix it. Every time it works for a few days then stops working. I've paid them ~$100 out of ~$400 in bills.

Last week it stopped again and I got fed up and called another company (B) to come. Same thing, they worked on it and were paid when they left (~$200). And now a week later and it's not working. I also called company A the same day and told them that I wouldn't be paying any more of the bills but would pay for the part they installed. Company A told me they still hand exhausted all the options in diagnosing the problem AFTER 6 times!

So I'm stuck with a busted heater, out $300, owe $300 more, coldest nights of the winter pending, and I'm in the same situation as a month ago.

What would the ot do?

THIS IS WHY I HATE SERVICE COMPANIES!

Buy a new furnace. Once these bozos start patching things it's the beginning of the end for any HVAC unit.

Own. Old unit. Again. It works. That's like saying buy a new car because the starter is broken.

Try another company, get a referral from someone with a positive experience.

A lot of these HVAC techs are parts changers who have no clue how to diagnose. The fact that company A has made 6 trips and has given up is proof they don't know what is up. There aren't that many parts that can be bad.

Pay by credit card next time. If they don't fix the shite after multiple trips dispute the charges with the credit card company.

Hope this helps.

Is the unit too old to have a blinking light to indicate a trouble code?

Has blinking light. Blinking twice (which tells me trouble with the igniter). When I unplug to reset (like the manual says) it functions properly until it doesn't ignite then defaults to double blink again.

Has this control panel: R20470502

It's actually exactly this problem: https://www.doityourself.com/forum/gas-oil-home-heating-furnaces/460335-ducane-lennox-direct-spark-igntor-problem-after-replacement.html#post1912497?highlight=

The guy changes the control panel (~$180 online) and it works.

I assume the previous repair guys have replaced the igniter at least once. My skill set is replacing the simple stuff like ignitors and flame sensors. Testing control panels is above my skill set. Maybe post make and model and somebody can help you out.

I think the part they replaced was the flame sensor.

Company a has said:
Moisture on ignitor
Bad flame sensor
Trash in gas line
Low gas pressure

Company B replaced bad ground wire.

Literally every visit is this:
Not working
They do something
It works for them 10 times when they try it
It works for a few days
Not working

Here's what I have:

If the igniter hasn't been replaced I would at least do that before buying a control board as indicated in your link. Igniter is only a couple of screws and hooking up the wire and they aren't pricey.

Check to make sure your vent pipe has a vent cap on it to keep out dew & rain, I seen the caps get blown off or rust apart before.

The rain or moisture can drip down and extinguish the pilot flame.

Update: googled my furnace model number and a description of the problem, some guy had the same exact issue and replaced the furnace control board. I found one on Amazon for $130 and installed it. Works like a CHAMP and deepens my hatred and distrust for service companies.

It took me, someone with ZERO hvac experience, about 10 min to google the problem and 10 min to install the part.

Lol at company #1 telling me after 6 visits they were still diagnosing the problem.
