Which would you rather do if you had to work and either of these two industries?

And I'm not talking about from the managerial side. I mean as grunt worker in retail (Wal-Mart, electronics, clothing, Dollar General, etc) or food industry (wait staff, back of house help, fast food, etc)?

Teaching. I'm a teacher; trust me it's so bad that I have to spend more time complaining about it then actually doing it.

Probably retail, food service can be a bitch with customers, but the staff always has a blast.

I think this. Just because when you leave work you smell like fried fast food.

I am going retail frick that folding and hanging shite up all day. I worked in the hospitality industry during college worked with good looking ladies and worked with a bunch of buddies. I say working in a restaurant is way better than retail. Imho

Too many variables.

Wait staff at fancy restaurant is better than being a cashier at Wal-Mart.

Paint guy at home depot is better than cooking fries at Burger King.

This is all subjective too.

Personally I would rather fry chicken at Popeyes than greet people at Wal-Mart. I can't really say why, I guess I feel like the days would be slower and more boring in Retail. I delivered pizzas for Papa Johns for a few years and it wasn't bad.

Worked in both during high school and college and retail is worse. Look at it this way, if you're a douche at a retail store, you can't get justice as an employee. At a food industry job, there are always ways for payback

Retail clothing blows. Crappy hours, working weekends, slow weekdays and dealing with grumpy women that can’t fit into the size they believe they should.

For me, between retail and food service...the more contact with the general public, the shittier the job. Give me cook or dishwasher. Next is cashier at either industry, direct public contact but it is limited, and bottom of the list is waiter (but makes the most money).

Being a manager is worse. Dealing with some of the complaints these dumb fricks can think of almost drove me crazy.

What? Cashier is the most direct public contact of any position in retail. You literally deal with everyone who spends money at the store.

This is a tough question. I'm not sure you can make a comparison.

I was a carhop at Sonic for 7 years while I was in high school and college and then I worked at Victoria's Secret for a summer.

Working fast food you deal with people who are usually upset about their order taking too long, being wrong, etc.

The retail issues I faced were more moral (theft) I guess you could say. It pained me to accept a return when I knew the chick returning used lingerie didn't pay for it. Teenaged girls would also come in with their boyfriends and try crap on in the dressing rooms.

I don't recall anyone being as upset with me at Victoria's Secret as they were at Sonic when their jalapeño cheeseburger came out with onions and tomatoes on it.

I think the real question is "which industry voluntarily bitches and complains more?"

Yeah I bet they see some shite, but they have no expectation of politeness of quality of work on the front end at Walmart so you can basically just completely ignore people and make it through your shift.
