Argued with a friend today about which works for both fat burning AND muscle retention. I do sprints after lifting to help cut fat and work on core. But he says that he fast walking on a high incline treadmill and that is better.

I asked around and checked online but the opinions seem split down the middle.

OT wisdom come through; which one really works?

More than one way to skin a cat. Do whatever works for you and stop trying to find the ultimate key. Have fun and track what you do. Mix it up, see what's best for you.

Bodybuilder aren't sprinting. They usually take the walking route.

Not looking for the ultimate key, I just don't want to be doing something that is plain wrong.

I didn't mean that in a negative way.

Just try things instead of asking. It's the best tool.

walking and sprinting should be utilized so you work your full range

however HIIT is more advantageous to fat burning and muscle retention like the OP asked. plus it allows you to work the high end respiratory output that really helps while posing on stage

Slow and steady is the best for long term.

While I agree with the cardiovascular and over all health benefits of running, muscularity retention and fat burning is and can be achieved by walking.

They are muscled up because of the type of muscle fiber required to sprint. They naturally (and trained obviously) are built to sprint.

Fat loss is calorie deficit. Some argue you can get more calories burned throughout the day with HIIT (calories burned during plus calories burned from increased metabolic rate throughout the day). I personally think one can burn more calories with low intensity. Granted it takes longer, but you can do more per day, each day without wearing yourself out.

I can easily burn 750 calories day after day. Hour bike in the am, 45 minute run after work. I could not do HIIT sprints or HIIT bike drills every day. My legs are jello after. The higher metabolic rate (like 10 calories an hour for 24 hours) does not make up for a missed workout in my case.

anabolic steroid is the only way. you will gain muscle AND fat during bulking, there is no way around it. also you'll lose fat AND some muscle when cutting.

Its really this simple, no workout regimen will be really effective if you dont track what you eat. If you want to lose fat without losing muscle then be sure to eat about 1.2g of protein per body weight while being sure to get a caloric deficit AND put your muscles through strenuous activity. Although recent studies have shown that it is almost impossible to lose muscle mass unless your caloric deficit is really really low.

Basically do whatever the hell you want as long as you diet correctly.

No time for that. Haha. I was lifting for a while. Not seriously, but went to the gym 4 or 5 days a week. Started triathlons and to be honest have kept the muscle definition. Swimming is a heck of a shoulder/tri/back workout. And biking can give me a decent leg workout (granted it's not like squats or dead lifts)
