Work apps - team productivity

What's the best app to integrate file sharing, messaging, task assignment and tracking, and notes when you manage multiple projects? Ideally it would be one that would allow access to members dependent upon their position or set authorization? It would also be good to incorporate outside vendors access to certain areas.

Looking at Slack. Any other suggestions!

I only know on prem solutions. All this fancy shmancy cloud business is just a phase.

We have used basecamp and Dropbox.
