Woman missing for 11 years, and presumed dead, found in the Keys
Cliff Notes:

quote:

One morning in February 2002, 43-year-old Brenda Heist dropped her two children off at school in a small town in Lancaster County, Pa.

That was the last time any of her family and friends saw or heard from her.

Until last week.

Heist approached a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputy Friday in Key Largo, telling him she may be wanted in Pinellas County. When the deputy ran her name, he found that she had been listed as “missing and possibly deceased,”

quote:

...after taking her then 8- and 12-year-old kids to school, Heist met with a group of homeless people planning to hitchhike to Florida.

“She decided to turn her back on her family and went along with that homeless group and traveled to Florida with them,”

quote:

“There was no mental health issue going on at the time that anyone was aware of. It appears that drugs had nothing to do with it and she was not dependent on drugs,” Schofield said.

quote:

[The Ex Husband] said his ex-wife and their children have expressed a desire to speak with each other, but for now they are taking things slowly.

quote:

As for the life insurance policy that paid off on his ex-wife, he said he’s unsure what will happen now.

Questions:

1.) Dafuq??
2.) Why on earth would the kids want to see her?
3.) What happens with the insurance payout? Water under the bridge?

I'd be willing to bet the insurance company sues the woman to get it back. The ex-husband won't be responsible. The ex-wife commited fraud, in the eyes of the insurance company.

No mental illness and no drug dependency?

Bizarre

Nah, she was in a sweet camper for 7.

For about seven years she lived with a man in a camper in Key West

I feel like this is debatable.

Looks like drugs might have had something to do with it

She knowingly didn't come forward while authorities were searching for her. If she has no mental or drug issues, she was of sound mind and judgement. That will be her downfall.

I'm going to assume some sort of mental illness is involved

The insurance company most likely won't try to subrogate against her. They will probably chalk it up as a loss. Insurance often won't subrogate against homeless or mentally ill

Hmmmm...didn't consider that angle. Maybe she's not evil or a nutjob.
