A few months ago my mouth started hurting, so I called my dentist. Didn't know what was going on, but ended up finding out it was my wisdom teeth. I was surprised to find that out. I'm almost 30, and go to the dentist often. I've had my fair share of work, but was always told I wouldn't have to worry about these.

Anyways got to see the oral surgeon that I got referred to today. I knew from my initial apt that I would be having them cut out. However it seemed unsure if I'd be put under. So today the oral surgeon said that he can do this with a local anistetic (sp). That truly scares me because I also found out my nerves are right by my bottom wisdom, which is common.

Would just like to hear anyone's opinion, especially if you were "awake" while getting them cut out (NOT Pulled)

Good news is that I was going to quit smoking when I had the surgery. Well 2 weeks ago quit cold turkey haven't had any nicotine since. *Smoked for 13 yrs 1pk/day*

Sry for the length and I expect TLDR, and other comments.

Et*

You one hundred percent want to be out. My wife just got hers out. Thank god for insurance. Cost $160. She's still in a little pain three days later. She tried to karate chop the smoothie I got her right after while she was still loopy because I wouldn't drive through whataburger.

Got mine out years ago and also was under.

Yeah mine is free thankfully, just worried I've heard tonsils, and oral surgery can be harder for adults vs kids.

Yeah, screw that noise. No way I'd experience that shite awake.

It's even more concerning being awake, because they said I'm high risk for numbness up to a year because of those nerves. They did say it would be longer due to getting an OR Room slot instead of Office.

I got an IV and general anesthesia. They gave me Valium to take beforehand even though I really wasn't nervous. I don't remember a damn thing. I was sore for a day or two but had decent pain meds and enhanced them with a beer or two as needed. My bottom ones were sideways and impacted and really weren't that big of a deal.

Everyone was dramatic and acted like it was this horrible thing when I was about to have mine done. It wasn't.

They knocked me out, cut all 4 impacted teeth out, I woke up later drugged up, and laid around on drugs for a week.

I don't bruise or swell easily, so I had zero swelling or bruising. Enjoyed my week of being fricked up and I guess the worst part was the withdrawals when I ran out of drugs

EDIT: I got my tonsils and sinus surgery done as a twofer as an adult, and it was pretty fun too. Recovering from surgeries is fun to me, but I'm not one of those "only take the pain meds if I desperately need it" types. I take them as directed. frick being in pain.

It's called "drop it". The app is cool, but didn't use it, just have it as a reminder now.

I've attempted to quit before, this time I guess I'm just lucky. Said frick it, I'm done, I want to live long for my kids. This time feels positive. Even drank on the 4th and was completely fine.

I had one cut out while only on the gas. Basically inhaled the gas for a period of time then came the shots to numb. Wasn't as bad as I thought but I heard the root snap as he put the tooth out. I took some percs over the weekend and was back to work on Monday.

Depends on well you tolerate chiseling, drilling, the smell, etc. while being aware of what their doing --> If you can handle all of that then local is a cheaper option when removing them.

I've had a tooth removed under local that required all the above and it was alright. However, I was offered IV sedation for my wisdom teeth removal and it was a much more pleasant expierence, .

Looking at your panorex, the bottom two wisdom teeth likely gonna take some drilling/chipping out the nearby bone to get it out.

If I were you I would opt for at least IV sedation if the additional cost is not a dealbreaker.

Thanks for the advice coming in. I'm sure I would be fine, but would rather be under. I know it's not a huge ordeal, but will admit I'm nervous about it. I've had plenty of surgeries, just don't like the cutting out of the teeth. Lol

It's free regardless, but will have to wait longer for an OR spot.

Wouldn't be surprised if your numb in your jaw/lower lips for awhile. Both of the bottom wisdomteeth are abutting the nerve on both sides.

Those look particularly nasty and their is no way that I would remove them without conscious sedation.

Another thing to consider is surgical planning using more that a 2d panorex radiograph. You might want to consider finding an OS with access to a Cone Beam (cat scan of the jaws and related structures).

Many times a simple panorex will not represent the true position of the mandibular nerve and a 3d image will be more accurate and allow the surgeon to plan the surgical strategy more efficiently.

Good luck.
