Anytime a band of snow passes across the great plains and Midwest the weather channel decides to give it a name.
It's fricking pussy arse bullshite.

No they shouldnt.
They are trying to create a market for their product.
The problem is that they may be creating panic too.
It's a pretty nefarius situation.

Meteorologists and others who report the weather are the most overhyping people alive.

Neither should any tropical lows classified below category 3 hurricane.

Naming winter storms is ridiculous. They did it so they could have hashtags on social media.

Are they giving them Eurocentric names? I want to see property destroyed and lives disrupted by Winter Storm Q'uanikashiza

I agree. It use to be "its going to snow _________ tomorrow" now they give it names and people relate named storms to hurricanes and it just makes it seem so dramatic.

frick this. I'm flying newark to dallas tomorrow and it's gonna snow here in the morning, change to rain, then 45-60mph wind gusts. For all i care the weather channel can name it whatever they want as long as i get out of here

Wtf are you talking about? We just got shite on and there was no storm name for it.
saying that no snow storm should be named is a crock of shite if they are naming every tropical depression in the gulf. I say frick it all. I went through hurricanes when I was in Louisiana and tornadoes in Oklahoma/Texas. They name a storm to get the government involved.
I'd rather go through a hurricane than a ice storm.

I'm sure insurance companies have something to do with storms getting "named". Lots of these homeowner policies have "named storm deductibles" where they get to jack up the deductible percentage. The more storms that are named, the less they have to come out of pocket to cover their policy holders.

Maybe, but why does it aggravate people so much?

It should be noted that the National Weather Service is not behind this naming winter storms crap. It falls squarely on The Weather Channel and its owner, NBC Universal. They are the only once who use the names, and they are the ones who do the naming.
The Weather Channel is a hype machine, as evidenced by things such as naming winter storms and developing their own severe weather indicies such as "TOR:CON". Doing things like this causes confuses for the general public, since it is different from what the rest of the weather enterprise is doing.
