Goldeneye Pinot Noir

Only buy this if the person it's for knows wine. If so they will appreciate it very much

Where did this "rule" come from?

Global moisture tends to be greater in odd years thanks to El Nino. It greatly affects growth in caostal and mountainous microclimates.

Be careful asking the local wine shop guy for recommendations. They sometimes are "pushing" a certain wine, but not because it is the best wine you can get at that price point.
Purple Angel is a nice gift and a fairly unique wine at the 50$ range.

Belle Glos "Dariyman or "Clark and Telephone" are big Pinots in a georgeous bottle. If you give that to someone they'll love it.
Good news is a lot of places carry it. Even your Cab drinkers will love this wine. This is your winner!!

This is also a very good choice but I believe this is a limited run and can be hard to find.

That's a tough sell across all wine regions world wide. There are way to many factors at play for that to be accurate. As recent as 2012, some wineries in France had 0 production due to an abnormally cold spring; Napa on the other hand had an amazing year.

Any particular varietal? If not, big red, light red, dry white, acid-driven white?

Sequoia Grove Cab ($30-35)
Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Pinot ($45-50)
Stagg's Leap Artemis Cab ($50)
Groth Cab ($50-55)

You won't be able to tell the first one apart from most $50 bottles. I don't drink much wine from other regions, or many other types than PN and CS, but I imagine there are some awesome ones that don't fit that description.

Some good recs above, I would go with either:

I'm not buying into the odd year thing. 2010 wa a fantastic year for the great Italian wines.

I think maybe the best Red Wine that I've drank was a $12 bottle of Cupcake-California Red(I believe).

I'd like to try a $50 bottle of wine though.
