Will the United States ever develop high speed railways?

The entire AmTrak incident got me thinking. Do you think high speed rail in the United States is a thing of the past?

I understand that flying is less expensive. But it seems like every year we're complaining more about domestic flights and how terrible some airports are.

If they did I wouldn't use them. Public transportation sucks.

We already do in the NE. But no, probably not wit how easy and efficient air travel is in the US. High speed rail would only work in a few locations (NE, Texas Triangle, California, FL)

Fair point. Public transportation in this country is unbearable in some areas.

Problem is that so many of our cities are so spread out. Anywhere in Europe when you arrive at a major city, you are either within walking distance your destination, or there is a local tube to take you where you are going. So if we make high speed between Houston and LA, once you get there, you are still going to have to rent a car. And at that point you are going to say, I should have just flown.

Public transportation is great if you're looking to get groped or mugged or if you just like the smell of urine.

trains work very well between DC and Boston...I don't understand why Amtrak can't make deals with the Post Office, UPS, and FedEx to move stuff between points on an electrified train rather than to burn diesel on I-95...

I think it could be used properly- for the most part NYC's subway works pretty well. The biggest problem there is that ridership is outgrowing infrastructure expansion. They literally can't build it fast enough.

Coffee... And great music. If you...
I'll put it to you like this, and then
I'll thank you for your time.
My answer is...
...no.

Agree. Would/does work around huge Conurbations like Boston to DC or LA to San Diego, DFW etc.

It's still a damn shame that a rail system between BR & NOLA doesn't exist.
