Most fraternities at LSU don't let black people in. Are they considered racist too?

Well, that's the definition of racist.

But that says more about the chapters than the fraternity as a whole. At ULL, there were blacks in Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Kappa Theta.

re: Will Comus ever parade again?
exactly... i'm shocked that a lot of people in this thread are acting as if in the inclusion or exclusion of a person from comus/proteus/momus is based solely on race.

Well, it's not just about race with these organizations. Proteus, Comus and Momus would no more have Tom Benson or Ronnie Lamarque as a member than they would a black person.

Actually there was a parade, the Krewe of America that was started after Comus stopped rolling, but to my best recollection they paraded twice and are now defunct.

True, but they paraded around 4:30 PM or so, which is still a couple of hours before Comus' traditional time slot.

So whites are excluded based on merit (or lack thereof), and blacks are excluded for being black? Lame.

Once again, a private organization can do whatever, but I have a right to my opinions about them.

Wooly, you are totally missing my point and proving it at the same time....

I'm not against private organizations at all....I'm an Endymion rider and quite proud of the fact....

To my way of thinking Comus is a bunch of stuffy inbreds who will fade away if they don't let some fresh blood in, in the bigger picture of the evolution of Mardi Gras, they are losing relevance other than with a certain subset of New Orleans uptown society......

no.... they would rather not ride than allow in undesirables

The thing I don't understand, why would a black want to join an organization that is full of old white dudes anyway? Just to say he can??

I agree that uptown New Orleans society will never change....but just like the old French speaking high society of NOLA past, their numbers are shrinking....

It was tongue in cheek lordguill. I think the key to bringing everyone together is to make fun of the stereotypes that exists between one another.

People have always said that. You're incorrect. Those families multiply and grow. They're not going anywhere. Old society doesn't go away.

I'm guessing I'd feel out of place at Zulu too, but I'd join in a minute if asked.
