I don't often unfriend people on facebook, but when I do, it's usually because that person is constantly posting political commentary on race / religion. I don't regularly "purge" my facebook friends because I don't really want to spend the time going through my list and deciding who should be on my friends list. The thought of doing this just seems like something a teenage girl would do just to slight people they don't like. But I'm starting to think that many people do a purge of their friends list. Every so often, I'll notice that a former facebook friend has unfriended me. It usually comes as a shock because I'm not friends with people that I've never known or been friendly with. I also don't post a lot so it is odd that someone would go out of their way to unfriend me. Most recently, I noticed that a former colleague who I was pretty good friends with had unfriended me. It sounds beta I know, but it kinda hurts. I haven't spoken to this person in a couple years, so I don't understand what would prompt the unfriending, unless this person does some sort of purge of friends that haven't been communicated with in a while.

Why do you unfriend people?

I hardly ever unfriend people... but I'll unfollow/hide people all the time.

You do realize you could just block someone from showing up on your newsfeed? That's what I do to fb friends that I like....just don't like their numerous political/race/whatever posts.

I don't. But the number of people that aren't hidden is shrinking...fast.

some people just can't help but be annoying so they get unfriended

if it's someone I'll run into in person I'll just hide them to avoid awkward conversation

I never scroll through my list and "purge"

If they are the type of person who constantly post bs regardless of what it's about they get unfriended.

I usually do so after seeing frequent political or racial posts. I'm not friends with people like that in person so why should I be on the interwebz?

This is why I go to Facebook. The entertainment is enjoyable.

I don't. I have a thorough and robust enough screening process for friending in the first place, that unfriending is unnecessary.

But I will spend the time to write a long thread regarding this subject.

When I see people who defriended me, I add them back, then remove them a few days later.

I just like adding to the awkwardness.

I'll hide people who are annoying. I don't feel like going thru my list and purging because I have better things to do...like re-add people who defriended me.
