Why do politicians and society in general give credence to celebrity opinions?

Kind of a spin off from the John Legend thread. Generally speaking, most celebrities (actors, musicians, models, etc.) are uneducated and not in touch with day to day life of your average citizen. Celebrities have no expertise in anything other than the superficial, so why should anyone care what they think on any non significant topic.

Same reason Nixon met Elvis.

People like celebrity.

People don't like politician.

If celebrity looks chummy with politician, it may warm up people's perception of politician.
It does work on idiots actually.

Because the uneducated masses take celebrity opinions as law. Therefore the politicians have to respond to the ignorance

The fact that trump was elected proves that celebrity and popularity matters.

Many celebrities feel that is important to use their fame and money as a means to change the world. Some seek noble causes while others do it for publicity.

While fair to criticize many of them over lack of formal education or expertise, they often get involved with and become guided by special interest groups. At that point it isn't much different than being a marketing spokesman.

People listen to them because celebrities in our country are held up like royalty by many people. The real hope is that people listen to a celebrity's message but go on to read up and become more educated about a subject.

Great question. Musicians are the worst. We are there to escape reality for a few hours. STFU and sing/play. Nobody wants to hear you preach.

I never could figure out why. When I go to the circus I don't want to be lectured by the dancing bear.

I guess I'd like to believe society is a little smarter than it actually is. I know John Legend is a bit different from your average celebrity in that he went to college, but unless he has a secret back ground in criminal justice or a law degree that we don't know about then why would JBE or LA legislature entertain a discussion on changing our criminal justice system.

Probably because more people pay attention to (can accurately relate the information back to an interviewer) the Kartrashians and Honey BooBoo than can relate and/or retell anything political, including actual important historical events.

This is a college affiliated website for instance. Students and alumni of an accredited upper level educational institution frequent here. Yet how many can accurately relate the events of even the Obama Administration? Who was Obama's Chief of Staff? Who was Speaker of the House? What state is former VP Biden from and what was his main duty as VP when Congress was in session?

If you can answer those questions without looking them up you are in the minority. I bet the ones who cannot answer the Obama Admin. questions do know who each of Kartrashians are dating though.

Now, with this site being "educated", extrapolate to the general public.

This is probably the best response I've ever seen in response to a thread on this site.

If a person has an opinion and a celebrity has the same opinion then you like that celebrity because they have the ability to blast it to way more people.

I do not hear of many libertarians or conservatives who love celebrities.

I hope all this makes sense.
