Why do people say "see what i'm saying" instead of "hear what I'm saying"

When people say "see what I'm saying," they are basically asking "can you envision what I'm saying." A lot of people are visual learners; therefore, when people are describing things to them, they are conceptualizing what they are saying in their mind. At least, that's what I believe the "saying" means - clear as mud?
