Let's just use this example:

"Frances is an SJW. So therefore, her being an SJW, she's a fricking moron."

Not saying that I don't make this mistake daily, because I do. Just wondering why people use "an" instead of "a" when the acronym starts with a consonant?

Because S phonetically starts with an E.

The same reason they put it in front of some H words. "An honest mistake" vs "a human error". Phonetically a vowel sound.

Using an vs. a in front of a word has nothing to do with the first letter of the word. The usage of one over the other is based on the phonetic pronunciation of the word.

Ok, so you're not technically wrong to use that?

The worst example of this you probably see 100's of times a day on this site is with LSU.

An LSU fan
An LSU player
An LSU game
An LSU opponent
etc
etc
etc

Are all incorrect. Should be:

A Louisiana State fan
A Louisiana State player
A Louisiana State game
A Louisiana State opponent
etc
etc
etc

Yep,

"Finally, the rule applies to acronyms as well. If you pronounce a letter as a letter and it begins with a vowel sound, you should precede it with an. The consonants with vowel sounds include f, h, l, m, n, r, s, and x."

I was always taught the way stated in my other post in the English classes I took.

Trust your ears, not your eyes.

S starts with the sound of E, therefore "an".

Same thing with letters like F. "An F-250"

I was agreeing with the guy who said what I posted was incorrect. I showed what I found that collaborated his statement. In short, I was admitting I was wrong in my first post and showing why I was wrong.
