Why do people flee to Mexico when wanted for a crime?

All these TV shows I watch, they eventually get caught doing something in Mexico and the US have communicated their information so the Federale just ship them back to American authorities.

on TV the bad guys are caught because they can't stop doing crimes.
in real life, they go through Mexico to Belize where they live well and keep their heads down.

Probably to fly out to Central America or Ireland. Some where that won't deport.

Lots of times they're Mexicans so that makes sense. Plus Mexico won't return them if capital punishment is on the table.
