Why do layoffs always happen on a Thursday (MSFT laying off 10K people today)

I've always noticed that layoffs happen on a Thursday. It has been true at both companies I've worked at (large publicly traded). Is there a reason for this?

Btw, MSFT is laying off 10K people today, rumored mostly to be folks from the Nokia devices division. MSFT added 30K Nokia employees as part of their acquisition last year.

I think it is a good way for employees to save face. They could just say you are fired because your rate exceeded your worth.

Sooo you should continue to employ 10,000 people regardless of whether or not it makes business sense? Sounds like any company you were in charge of would not fair well.

It gives people the weekend to get over the shock and initial emotional reaction. In cases of individual layoffs or packaged out scenarios, they can spend the weekend calming down and putting a game plan together for the next work week as opposed to going out the next few business days job hunting while being raging mad.

Also, I'm sure in large layoff scenarios for public companies it is stock market related.

Wouldn't go that far, but with the economy, no doubt the balance of power between employer and employee has shifted to the employer.

Thanks to Obama and all others living off a government check.

Why would it be? The company already sold its stock to the public.

The groups I 've worked in has been outsourced/laid off/downsized/rightsized twice in the past 15 years. It's not fun when it happens but I've gotten a nice little compensation package each time and ended up somewhere better.

These things happen. It will work out.

As soon as the layoff goes public if it is substantial it will impact stock price significantly. It could be strategic to allow no trading over the weekend so the full details of the company strategy can be absorbed and reckless trading on the emotional aspect of a layoff is less impactful to the price per share. I'm just speculating of course.

C'mon, you know that the exec's and many others within the company have compensation tied to stock performance, be it through bonuses or stock options/grants.

Of course they will time announcements like this and many other events to be the least detrimental or most beneficial to the company's stock price.

10k qualified people hitting the job market all at once? Wouldn't want to be getting started in that field.

I believe the proper term is "right sizing" not layoff.
