Why are murderers and crazy people attracted to The Catcher in the Rye?

Is it because of themes of alienation?

On a side note, who is this generation's version of J.D. Salinger and which modern book is as powerful and inspiring as Catcher in the Rye?

I can't pinpoint a specific author, but the book I'd select as a candidate is The Turner Diaries, not for being a coming of age book about alienation, but rather for inspiring absolute crazy people to potentially commit awful crimes due to the book's extremely hateful racist plot and the exaggerated godlike heroic portrayal of the racist main characters.

There's a good Frontline doc. on this. Both John Hinkley Jr and Mark David Chapman were fascinated. Chapman was reinacting parts of the book at the time.

One of my favorite books.

I read this book this year because I felt like I was missing out on something since it is talked about so much. I guess I should have read it when I was a whiny, think I know it all teenager, because as an adult, I thought it was awful.
