I've been on Lavalo, it made me feel like shite. Lipitor made my joints and muscles hurt for no reason. I'm on Pravachol now and no wierd side effects. Total cholesterol was 270 in the beginning, much lower now, something like 110.

Bad cholesterol was 240 in December, now 140-ish. 5mg Crestor a day. No bad side effects, no more arrhythmias, and lots more energy. Losing a few pounds and eating a little better helped with all that as well.

The ratio between your HDL and LDL is probably just as important as your overall cholesterol number. I take a low-dose generic statin (simvastatin) to lower LDL along with extended release niacin (Niaspan) to raise HDL. The combination has kept my numbers near ideal for several years now while allowing me to relax some of the dietary restrictions I had been observing.

BTW, statins have other inflammation fighting properties that make them beneficial but in higher dosages can cause problems.

Ah, the old statin myth. If you're in reasonable health, just eat a ketogenic diet. it does just as good as pills, maybe better. Probably look at quit drinking for 6 months too, that will drop trigs like a rock. Go find a doctor that knows the current findings on cholesterol, which is hard to do.

Most doctors do not know the newest research on cholesterol. As such, they just shove a Rx at you instead of coming at it from a different angle Here's the big secret, you need cholesterol, and having a good amount is healthy. Also, dietary cholesterol has no correlation to serum cholesterol. Cholesterol is like the fire truck that carry firemen in your body putting the fire (inflammation) out.

Look at Dr. Peter Attia and his NuSi and his older eating academy website. The Eating Academy

He is extremely well respected in the medical and fitness world.

:edit: I am not a doctor and don't play one. I've just read a ton on recent research.

I don't recommend taking them; too many side affects vs. the good they provide. Keep up the healthy eating and exercise and you'll be alright.

I refused to take them & my current total is 164. I need to bring my "good" cholesterol up a little though.

How old are you? My total is higher than yours but my good is around 60. I'm 33 and doc told me unless something changed drastically there was no need to go on meds.

60 is great; if my good wasn't so low I wouldn't be worried about the slightly high bad

And I'm 44

Thanks for the info, my doc has actually been pretty hesitant. My numbers have been off for over 2 years and he's just been monitoring.

I may just quit drinking as someone suggested for a long period and see what that does but the problem is that I really don't drink that much to start with.....and it's football season....I need my Woodford
