apparently, some of the locals are unhappy that folks are buying properties and instead of renting them, using them for airbnb and charging 200 bucks a night

Yep. Its about 3 blocks from my house. Actually, its in the Bywater, and its spot on with the criticism.

Why would you complain about that? They have every right to do what they want with it no?

Lots of people are getting zoning violation notices.

It's actually illegal in Nola. Not that I agree with that.

Hippy new orleanian types think you should rent to them instead of tourists.

A lot of neighborhoods have laws against short term leases.

I don't care that they are doing that in the Marigny/bywater. , but, can see people's problem with it. Residential houses aren't suppose to be short term rentals. Would be the same thing if your neighbor started running a hotel out of his house. All kinds of people coming and going.

That neighbor is going through such a turn around that things like this are expected. It is a trendy up and coming part of the city for that type of person and people who consider themselves trendy want to visit and stay in this part.

I think they're complaint about the housing prices are misguided though. Housing prices go up when an area becomes desirable, AirBNB or not. I'm sure they wouldn't mind their neighborhood going back to being a dump if that meant prices would go down right?

Are the two people pictured on the sign supposed to represent the residents of that community? If so, I wouldn't want to live anywhere near there.

Based on the cutout nature of the scene, I'd guess the creators are actually mocking the people who come to stay there, not the ones who live there.

It's sarcasm, you see.

Kinda agree. Hotels and bed&breakfasts have to play by certain rules. You shouldn't be able to turn your home into a permanent hotel unless we want to do away with all taxes and zoning related to hospitality.

This reminds me of the Uber debate.

Once again the detractors are on the wrong side of history.

This is way different than uber. As a resident of a dual apartment, I wouldn't like the idea of having new people to deal with 5-6 times every single month. That would be annoying and you may get some bad travelers every now and then and also a lot of folks likely looking to stay up and party at all hours of the night.

The taxis had literally zero argument in their favor.

I absolutely despise the people who think like this. What petty, precious crackers they are.

Not really snobs like Uptown types, these are people who see themselves as neighborhood purist and are very much against gentrification.

Their collective butts are still raw from the smoking ban which they wanted to be a individual rights issue, now they want to tell a homeowner what he can and cant do with his private property...its hard to keep up with at times.
