I think the good cooking generations are disappearing. I'm wondering how it will be when we are the grandparents.

My grandmother is dead, and I am a better cook than my mother. She was never much of a cook. Growing up my father did most of the cooking.

Nah it's just shifting from the women to the men.

The women in my family can cook their asses off, but I'm going with myself, simply because Cajun women usually don't cook outside their comfort zone. I study everything from Japanese to Indian. The wife (or anyone in her family) cannot boil a pot of water.

Same boat. The only other person in my family besides me who can cook is my sister.

My family all came from Kentucky so they all knew how to cook southern-homemade food. I/my wife/in-laws are all Ohio born and don't cook very well. Must be a southern thing

Not trying to downplay some of the more difficult aspects and dishes, but being a competent cook isn't really a difficult thing. Assuming your goal is only to make good tasty food, all you have to do is follow typically straight forward directions from a recipe. The basic premise of if you heat food and mix the ingredients together then it will cook holds up pretty consistently. There are some techniques that may make it easier, but these things usually aren't hard to learn or figure out.

If you are trying to actually invent your own dishes and figure out flavors then I could see how that would get difficult, but I am assuming that isn't what most people are doing. I just think that people who don't know how to cook are generally afraid to try, or I guess they just don't have the desire.
