It was the one that happened in March 1993. When it arrived in the southeast it was about as powerful as a Category 3 hurricane, producing 12-foot storm surges along the Florida coast as well as tornadoes. Places as far south as Mobile got up to 4 inches of snow, while Birmingham got slammed with 12-15 inches.

I remember my dad opening up the blinds of our sliding glass door which opened up to the back porch. It was a total white out, punctuated by lightning and thunder - which I didn't know could be part of a snow storm. When we woke up that next morning, there was a foot of snow on the ground and our power was out. Had to get some guy with chains on his tires to pick us up and take us to my grandparents. We were among a handful of people on the road that morning.

Looking back on it...it all seemed very apocalyptic.

I was a funeral director/embalmer back then. The owner wanted someone at the funeral home at all times, so the employees had to take turns spending the night there (we had a bedroom). The night the storm hit was my night at the funeral home. Woke up that next morning, showered and dressed then went to unlock the doors for business. Couldn't believe all the snow. People couldn't get in to work. We had 3 funerals schedueled that day. It was a mess.

Our power went out and I remember sleeping in the living room. My parents hung blankets on the hall way and going into the kitchen to keep the heat in from the fire place. I was 6 or 7 at that point

I remember it well. My whole neighborhood lost power for a week and a half. We stayed with the neighbors because they had natural gas. Nobody knew how to drive in the snow, so people were sliding off the roads and wrecking everywhere. I was 14 so I had a blast.

The bedroom was fine. The closing down at night, including walking through the large chapel and locking up and then walking back through it with no lights on was a bit unnerving when we had bodies in house.

We played plenty of practical jokes on friends at night in that place.

I remember it. Some surburbs of bham got closer to 20 inches.

The storm was very well forecasted and predicted. People had several days to prepare. A cat 2-3 hurricane was coming and temps in the bham area were forecast to be in the low teens or single digits so there was no doubt what was going to happen. The news told people to prepare to be without power for days and to be very cold.

It was a miserable arse week. I was just a kid, but that shite scarred me and I remember it well. No power and freezing arse cold huddled in front of the fire place eating the same cold food everyday was no fun. Won't ever forget how miserable those 6-7 days without power being cold the entire time and the whole family sleeping close together in front of the fire.

I was at LSU at the time. I have no recollection of such a storm. Probably too drunk to remember.
