I hear you. Sounds very similar to our situation, wife won't work the first year or so while we get acclimated. It will be really hard leaving all the help, the MIL watches her every day and my parents are not 5 minutes from my house. We don't want to leave, but being in Healthcare, Louisiana isn't the best place for my future.
I'm in finance and most of those jobs are in larger metros, so if I want any type of career, like yourself, a bigger city is a must. We like it here but a trusting babysitter would be great. We don't really have a choice right now. She's itching ton get back but I really have no desire to go back and take a pay cut a limit career potential. Kids just get more expensive as they get older. We've rented the first year and I'm trying to get her to buy to lower the housing expense, but she's missing her mom pretty bad.

I left in the 80's due to the local economy. I wasn't a pussy about it.
I came back when things got a little better.

The only thing keeping me here is we have family and friends. We have a 1.5 year old, and plan to have another baby by next year, and having grandparents close is invaluable.
Thats the only thing keeping me as well. My parents. I'd love to live elsewhere, but I got roots that are hard to cut between having kids and nearby grandparents

If you have kids in school, and they are above average to high achievers, Ga might be the State for you.
HOPE Scholarship - have to have a 3.0 and maintain a certain level at your chosen in state school. Every school is different as far as how much one is eligible for per quarter. A student at UGA will get around $3200 per quarter when taking a 15 hour load. If the student does his/ her part they will get around $40k of tuition and books over 4 years.
Zell Miller Scholarship- the premium HOPE funded scholarship for the highest achievers. Much higher qualification level but pays $4600 towards tuition/books per quarter if taking 15 hours. Payout over 4 years has around a $58k value attached.
All lottery funded.

After doing business travel for a few years, I can see why.
The food, in a lot of places, is pretty lame.
Bring a copy of this with you and you are good to go.
I moved from BR/NOLA to Dallas when I was 24 and like many others, my quality of life has gone up. I miss my friends and family in LA but it's so easy to communicate with them with modern technology. Distance isn't as big as a factor.

Iowa City seems like a pretty chill
one of my best friends from college recently moved to West Des Moines and loves it.
I went to Houston then L.A. then Boston then back to L.A. I could eventually see myself moving again. I absolutely love the northeast and might end up back there at some point. Probably in Vermont or Maine.
I still have family in La and go back a couple times a year to visit, but don't think I would move back there barring some kind of extreme situation.

I have thought about moving away from the Ms Gulf Coast but to be honest I love living here. I love the culture, the weather, most of the people , and the food.
It is like we have the best of Mississippi and Louisiana without a lot of the issues both states have. I can be in Florida, NOLA or BR in no time.

The United States is 19 trillion in debt. Which Utopian state are you going to?

My wife and I have family obligations that we must attend too, but after those are taken care of, we will leave louisiana. There is to much opportunity out there to stay in one location.

Seems from the posts in this thread that what keeps many people in the state is the fact that our hard headed parents won't get the f out. So we feel like we should stay to be closer.
Yet if you don't live in the same town, you hardly ever see them. If you're a 2 hour drive (nola to Laffy) or 2 hour flight (nola to DC/Florida/many others) what does it matter?

Clicked thread just to see the vote count. Legitimately surprised.

Depends if you have kids or not. Parents make good free babysitters if you don't have kids then I have no idea why stay around if you're not making good money.

lets not pretend that a 2 hour drive is not easier than a 2 hour flight
my parents make the 2 hour drive all the time
