Not sure about the rest of the state but NOLA is popping.
The southern part of the state is doing pretty damn good in many industries. Between BR and Nola, the refineries and chemical plants of all kinds are doing very well and continue to thrive due to cheap natural gas for feed stock among other reasons.
There are still some big new construction projects on the books for this area, even some from foreign country investments.
And lets not even get started about the Lake Charles area. That is just insane.
Yes many other states are better, but there are many others that aren't as good.

If I could afford it or get another job lined up I'd be out of here before the sun set.

People definitely make way too big a deal over the food situation
After doing business travel for a few years, I can see why.
The food, in a lot of places, is pretty lame.
The food wouldn't keep me here if I felt like I needed to move.

How many of you moved out of state while having a family and established careers? Seems like it would be tough. What's the process?
I moved right before my oldest started school. It was pretty easy really.
1. I looked for a better job and quickly found one making about 25% more than I had been making in Baton Rouge.
2. Sold my ~1,500 square foot house in Prairieville and purchased a newer 3,200 sq ft house in Katy for only a little more.
3. Put my kids in some of the highest rated schools in the country.
4. Networked in the Houston area and after 2 years got offered a job making a good bit more than the job I moved here for.

I can see missing a lot of things but food just doesn't make sense. There's good food almost anywhere and I can cook anything "Cajun" no matter where I live
Also.....you can always just indulge in all the foods you miss when you come back to visit family. That's what I do.

I can see missing specific Gulf coast items. But I've done my fairshare of traveling and I've never felt like I would dread not having S.Louisiana food.

Texas is just so much more appealing than what the idiots in this state have made it.
I moved from La to Texas a few years ago. Texas wasn't my lifelong dream, as I always wanted to live either near beaches or mountains, but it's close enough to family in La and offers way more than La in terms of quality of life and raising a family. If festivals and Mardi Gras aren't your biggest needs in life then there's little reason to stay in La.

My SO is getting her masters at the University of Iowa and while I've never been much of a midwest person. Iowa City seems like a pretty chill city with a number of opportunities.
Outside of that, I've always saw myself settling down somewhere in the Pacific NW. I spent most of my childhood vacations in that region of the country. So we will see, I'm just stitching for something completely different from here.

I'll never discourage a young person from moving away for a few years.
Our friends that lived in Seattle moved there after college, lived there for 2 years, then decided they wanted to be closer to family after a family member suddenly died and they couldn't attend the funeral.
But they did get to experience living away for a couple years.

Most states have something similar. Georgia has HOPE.

i left in 2012. moved from BR to Houston. met my wife and now i have 2 little girls. best decision i made. Louisiana will always be home, though. if there were good oil and gas jobs in Louisiana, i would come back. but, all the good jobs are in Houston it seems (unless your last name matches the last name of the owner of the company).
