If so how did you cut to cord or did you soldier on and tried to make it work? Apparently one of the deep dark secret of someone I known on and off for a couple of years is they get clinically depressed and like to cut themselves when off the meds.

It may sound harsh but , I don't get it and it kind of make me wary. ? I know the rules of thumb is "Don't stick your dick in crazy." but...what if you didn't know at the time?

Run

If you are asking, then you've already made up your mind. Don't look back.

I have a cousin who is mentally challenged. I sometimes have to pick him up for holidays. He had a seizure one time in the car and that scared the frick out of me.

Get out, they need to figure things out before they can be in a relationship. Maybe they need someone to be there for them, but that person shouldn't be you. If you stick around they will always have that codependency on you, and won't be able to heal themselves properly. It will save you a ton of heartache and frustration too. Trust me, I've been there.

As far as cutting the cord, talk to their family if you can, make sure they will be there for them, tell them you want to leave and ask them how to go about it, cause they know the person best. But you need to make a clean cut, don't leave a chance of reconciliation in their head, make sure its a final and complete severance.

Dated a guy for 9 years that was officially diagnosed with bipolar towards the end of our relationship.

I ran, wish I would have done it MUCH sooner.

I dated a bipolar for a while. When she got on the right combination of meds and her moods leveled out, she broke it off with me. A therapist told me this isn't unusual. The other person is a reminder of their prior situation, so they don't want to be with them anymore.

Mine wasn't a cutter, she was depressed and needed meds though. She wouldn't take them.

You will spend all of your time trying to make them happy, which is impossible. They are the only ones that can do that. You don't want to fight that battle brother.

I got out, and glad I did.

Dated a real messed up chick. I got her to stop drinking, cutting, and killing small animals and she became obsessed and was texting me 24/7. I thought she was just a regular girl when I first met her but apparently she had a rare brain disorder. Probably the worst 2-3 years of my life.

Yep, your mood begins to be totally dependent on their mood. It's like walking on eggshells the entire relationship.

But mine didn't want to take his meds. Meds make a HUGE difference.

Former SO was fun, kind & hot. The first couple of days prior to the onset of her menstrual period and through the period she went bat shite crazy. Everything was stacked against her and everyone was out to get her - including me. We sat down and had serious discussions about how to deal with the problem but she could never overcome it. After dealing with it for a couple of years I moved on.

Considering how widespread and typical this situation is, I don't think that's what the OP is talking about.

Yep, I don't get why people are scared to take the meds.

I had an anxiety problem a few years back. I got on meds for about a year, straightened myself out, and quit the meds cold turkey. Helped me tons.

The meds don't have to be lifelong, and there isn't really a stigma anymore.

No - I've been around the block several times and have been in multiple long-term relationships. Never seen anything like it.

Some don't like how the meds make them feel. Or they start taking them, feel "normal" and think they don't need the meds and quit them(not wanting to recognize it was the meds that made them feel "normal").

My ex already had a HUGE distrust of the medical community in general so having a doctor tell him he had to take meds to function didn't sit well with him at all.

makes sense.

I guess there is much more of a negative stigma with seeing a doctor in the first place.

doesn't make sense to me. If you are sick, see a doc. that's the way I looked at it.

I will admit these types of psychological issues tend to cause a degree of irrationality.

I'm telling you man, we went to great lengths to determine how best to combat the problem and nothing helped her. I hated to lose her but I just couldn't go through that insanity every month.b
