Why do they even put these on automatic transmission vehicles?

Well it's also known as the "emergency brake". For good reason.

Because I've seen a kid crawl in a jeep on a hill and knock the shifter out of gear. After it rolled down the hill and into the side of another vehicle I said, "That's why it has an emergency brake.".

They taught us in Driver's Ed to always set the parking brake, so the first time I drove my mom's car by myself, I set it. The next time she used the car, she drove off without knowing it was set and burned it up

back in the early 90's while working in the Bay Area - (San Fran not chack) I used mine all the time - the apartment I rented had a pretty good grade to the actual bay.

My bad, typing too fast. I fixed it. I understand why they would be on a manual transmission auto.

Only time I ever use mine is when I am stopped on a boat ramp.

Do people spend their entire lives parking on flat surfaces?

I'm always on the road, and I drive rental cars. Sometimes I don't know what's going on with the car, and I'll drive for ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. What kind of emergency is this? I need to not stop now. It's not really an emergency brake, it's an emergency make-the-car-smell-funny lever.

Not with these new electronic parking brakes. No more hand brake turns.
