Privacy played second fiddle to ventilation. Doors were left open on both ends of houses in Nola back in the day because it was less cultured.

Alternatively, folklorist and professor John Michael Vlach has suggested that the origin of the building style and the name itself may trace back to Haiti and Africa in the 18th century and earlier. He claimed the name may have originated from a Dahomey Fon area term 'to-gun', which means "place of assembly". The description, probably used in New Orleans by Afro-Haitian slaves, may have been misunderstood and reinterpreted as "shotgun".

Homes taxed by frontage
This, and taxed by rooms in the house and closets counted as rooms - which is why many old homes lack closets.

lolz
I can guarantee that that nothing created by natives of Africa or Haiti, excluding perhaps ancient Egypt, has been the inspirational basis for any Western architectural designs.

Also taxed by doors, which is why the entrance to my balcony is a window.

Actually, it's a fact that the shotgun home (and a lot of the architecture) originated in West Africa, spread to the Caribbean, and ended up in New Orleans/the south. If you ever watch a show like Black Sails, which is filmed in Cape Town and set in the Caribbean, the city scenes look almost just like New Orleans.

It's so when the thugs kick in your front door, you can easily shoot at them from the back of the house with your shotgun.
Very practical for a place like NOLA
